RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Governor Northam announced that Virginia’s statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was removed from the U.S. Capitol overnight.
A representative from the governor’s office was present for the removal along with United States Senator Tim Kaine and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton.
For 111 years, the Confederate statue has stood along with America’s first president George Washington as Virginia’s contributions.
The two statues were added in 1909, which was 44 years after the Confederacy rebelled against the United States and was defeated.
Except that even in Virginia, about 40% of US military officers remained loyal to the United States.
They included Generals Scott and Thomas and Admiral Farragut.
So loyalty to the United States over their home state was not an alien concept to many Virginians at that time.

Northern States changed no rules in 1860, rather, they constitutionally elected the first ever openly anti-slavery Republican president.
That drove Southern Democrats berserk, and the rest is history.

Lee would eat their lunch, but looking at them they'd definitely put up a fight for their Big Macs.

You don't think we are in the midst of a "revolution"? Perhaps removal of our history, via statues, is part of the "revolution".
I am not a fan of the Confederacy; but, RE Lee is part of our history, and he should not be erased.

I was thinking more of a traditional violent revolution, more than this one being done via insiders, backed up by the credible threat of violence.
Anyway, I’ve just never heard of this crap happening elsewhere, even in Western Europe, where they don’t run from their history (or allow others to force them to run), even though they also have plenty of blood in their past.
What we’re seeing now is the disintegration of a country, mostly from the inside - and that was because the people needed to hold the country together punted after coming back from WW2. I doubt we even make it another decade as even a semi-free country.
Yes, many were loyal to the union. I am not saying that. It was a hard choice for many people. I am saying thtat back then people tended to identify as Virginians or Carolinians or Geaorgians rather than Americans.
Agreed - Lincoln's election was a turning point, but he could not abolish slavery w/o congress. I did not mean changing the rules literally, Congress was not allowing statehood to those who were not anti-slavery, thus stacking the deck against the south. The south saw their days were numbered.
BTW - most of the north didn't give 2 craps about slavery, in fact they practiced it.
When I up to the NE from TX for work I was shocked at the racism and the way black people were treated and talked about. I had to go to 'diversity training' because of my accent, but those same people dropped the "n word" like it was nothing. THERE'S your "crock of Democrat Adam Schiff!".

In 1861 Robert E Lee was the most respected man in America. Lincoln wanted him to command the Union troops and he refused saying his allegiance was with Virginia. He was a states rights anti-federalist. We could use a few men like him today.
Have no fear we have Joe and Hunter Biden and those of their ilk.
If removing a statue is done under the law - I’m fine with it. Maybe someday in Florida we’ll remove every statue connected to a democrat... lawful is fine.
The problem our side had with removing statues was letting roaming bands of thugs tear down what we thought of as historic art. Mobs outside of the law....
Like in the current rerun of the 1988 movie “Pleasantville”... of course in the movie it’s liberal art being destroyed by the mob - but it’s the same mindless destruction.

I may be in a minority, but I think Lee should have fought for the Union...as he swore he would do on the Plain at West Point...he resigned his commission to fight for Virginia...
Samuel Phillips Lee, cousin of Robert E. Lee, who didn’t follow the same treasonous path. Served in the US Navy. When asked why he didn’t join Virginia he replied; “When I find the word Virginia in my commission, I will join the Confederacy”
