Retired Army Col. Douglas Macgregor, newly-appointed as a senior adviser at the Pentagon, has a track record of making controversial statements. But his most provocative of all might be a proposal to do away with the U.S. Marine Corps.
In a 2012 opinion piece for Time Magazine, Macgregor, a decorated veteran of the Gulf War, argued that the Corps was living on its past glories and was unsuited for combat on today's battlefield, with the possible exception for pushover enemies.
He went further, too, suggesting the acronym "USMC" should really stand for "Under-utilized Superfluous Military Capability."
"Most of today's Marine force consists of airmobile light infantry," Macgregor wrote. "This Marine force is designed for use in the developing world against incapable opponents from Haiti to Fiji, but not much else."

Why is this guy still in the US military?
Well, that’s thinking outside the box.
Waaaaaaaaaay outside the box.
What a turd.
As long as there has been a Marine Corps, there have been people in and out of the military who wish to do away with it.
What an offensive POS.
“Retired Army Col. Douglas Macgregor”
The US Army isn’t fond of competition either.
Jealous much?
They are used in cases where you don’t have 6 months to mobilize your main force.
This is definitely one of those ideas you keep to yourself!
Army...
Hire a Marine and he’ll say to eliminate the Army.
OH HELL NO!
Not many know this but being a former Marine, it is the only Branch of the Military which exclusively answers to the President, NOT Congress or Politicians. Research it yourself.
This is traitorous talk! How can this man keep his rank?
when you realize that most of the US Military officer corps are merely a social-engineering, statist, DC bureaucrats, no different from HHS, Interior, or Dept of Education or any other government office - the mindset is completely understandable
Long time Army guy here.
In the big strategic scheme of things, the Marines’ primary roll is to establish a beach head, expand that lodgment, inland a bit.. to possibly some key airfields or whatever, then hand it off to the Army.
This is why they have an internal combined arms capability to include fixed wing aircraft.
Yes...they do lots of other things, and are more or less interchangeable with mission sets that the Army Infantry does...but the reason they exist is for amphibious landings on hostile terrain.
It’s outside the box, because this guy’s box in full of rocks.
The Army is more afraid of the Marine Corps (in budgetary terms, getting money the Army thinks it needs) than any other thing in the world. With China Joe in the WH, budget cuts are in the air, and out comes the Army’s “long knives.”
And “ARMY” stands for “Ain’t Ready to be a Marine Yet,” Colonel...
It was just our birthday LAST week, geez...
This is the same mentality that says we don’t need A10 Warthogs, we have F-35s.
Yes, let’s remove barriers to a take over.
Geeze...I'm ex Army and think this comment is beyond stupid.
He has a point, but as long as the American people want a Marine Corps, then they will have it. If that were to ever change......then I’d expect the fiscal sense would see that it be eliminated.
