SANTA FE – Joe Biden appears well-positioned to win New Mexico – and its five electoral votes – in this week’s election, a new Journal Poll found.
“Trump hasn’t been able to break into the Democratic support in New Mexico,” said Brian Sanderoff, the president of Albuquerque-based Research & Polling Inc., which conducted the poll. “The voters have made up their minds in this race.”
The Democratic presidential nominee had a sizable lead over President Donald Trump among New Mexico voters, though the race has tightened since a previous poll conducted before Labor Day.
In the most recent poll, 54% of likely general election voters said they planned to or had already voted for Biden, while 42% said they support Trump.
The split between the two candidates had been at 54%-39% in the previous Journal Poll, which was conducted in late August and early September.
Just as in the previous Journal Poll, Biden’s commanding advantage was due largely to strong support among female voters, Hispanics and self-described moderates and liberals.
Among women, 58% of those surveyed said they would vote for Biden, compared with 39% who said they would back Trump.
Male voters were much more closely divided, with 48% saying they preferred Biden and 45% saying Trump was their candidate of choice.
While New Mexico was long regarded as a swing state, a Republican has not won the state’s five electoral votes since George W. Bush did so in 2004.

Thanks for your post. I know it’s probably a longshot, but I am hopeful for New Mexico. Biden’s comments about oil and gas could actually put it in play.

I live in Colorado. Just tonight on the local news, they’re spouting about nationally that Biden is ahead by double digits. They won’t stop.
I live in very red Northern Idaho.....very north. I had a burn out hippie gimmedat living down the road from me as he inherited his father’s house. after a few years he sold it last summer and moved to NM.
Indians vote heavily dem. Tribal leaders like to play both sides.
It would be extra for Trump.
But if he wins we could win the Senate seat and that’s a huge deal.
.keep your five votes. Trump has written them off.
I haven’t watched local news in NM for two months. They spout the mainstream network line or news from AP, just as bad. And now that the RadDem leftists control all state government, it’s now worth getting my BP up.
I guess the voters in New Mexico, which is the third leading energy state, are happy to be put out of work by Grandpa Groundhog. Or maybe the surging support for Trump among Hispanics(new Mexico has a 49% Hispanic population) is still a mystery to the media in NM; or maybe it is that the ABQ Journal missed the 198,000 voting age Native Americans in New Mexico who have just endorsed Trump. Whatever it is this is just another fake poll designed to shape not measure voter sentiment.
Not only will Trump win New Mexico, he will take at least one House seat with him.
