WSB radio just announced Trump will not participate in the virtual debate next week. That's all I have so far.

Edited to add:

Pres Trump: "I'm not going to waste my time on a virtual debate." Fox Business interview with Maria Bartiromo

The TDS-unhinged Commission on Presidential Debates figured out a way to get their dementia patient out of the debates - Change the rules in the middle of the campaign stream and not bother consulting the President.

The Commission should be abolished.

You can’t see it because it was announced before talking to Trump camp about whether these terms are acceptable. That in itself was rude, biased, and unacceptable.

Apparently neither campaign was informed ahead of time.

Can't say I blame Trump. A virtual debate would allow Biden to just read teleprompters. No one would know what is on the other side of the camera.

I’m sure the Biden campaign did the actual informing. Told the commission what to do.

That was my first thought. They will spoon feed Biden the answers and exert even more control in cutting Trump off... probably just cut his feed (they were already talking about cutting off his mic)

Yes, but Trump is going to get it piled on as criticism that he put himself and others at risk of COVID-19.

How would they assure us that Biden is not wired or checking a teleprompter in a virtual debate?

Did they assure you that he wasn't wired in the first debate?

He wants a real debate so they can’t prop Biden up and remain unseen while doing it.

No I have not read it, but I understand his maxim to be to walk away from a negotiation if the deal isn't right.

His war is not with the commission, his war is not even with Biden, his war is for the hearts of the American voters. How does this advance that goal?

Even summoning cheers from us conservatives, how does it advance his case with the whole voting demographic? Is it supposed to increase conservative turnout?

The Debate Commission is just another Deep State lackey group. I guarantee this was planned right after the first debate, and had to be announced today especially after Pence kicked Harris’s fanny all over the place last night. They knew full well that Trump probably would refuse to debate in this format so now the media has their narrative for today. They don’t have to talk about last night’s massacre. Had Harris done well last night the in person debate would still be taking place. These Deep Staters are so full of crap!

The secondary effect is that the expectations will be high for the third debate on Biden--the opposite of the expectations for first debate, and interest in watching it will be very high--which is ripe for Trump to move the needle on last debate before election day.

If there is no second debate do you really think there will be a third one?

If the terms of the “Virtual Debate” were announced without consulting the Trump team then I think this is the only appropriate response. Make it clear that this is a contest between a fearless leader willing to take risks and a pathetic old codger hiding from pathogens in his basement.

I would encourage President Trump to book a hall for that date and get tested beforehand. Invite Ol’ Joe. If Biden doesn’t make it Trump can debate a TV monitor showing some of Sleepy Joe’s greatest recorded moments.

Good for the President!

A virtual debate becomes nothing more than an infomercial for Biden.

That is, after they give him the TelePrompter (off camera of course), the questions in advance (which they did in the last debate), all the opportunity to address his talking points.

Then, cut-off the President’s mike, refuse to show his screen, allow him to sit there and do nothing while Biden spreads all kinds of lies and slander.

A virtual debate is totally meaningless.

If the president is not contagious and he becomes immune from the virus the debate commission is only trying to continue the myth and put a target around him for having the virus. They aren’t following the science.

My best explanation is that Trump is going to show up at the debate venue in Miami.

And he was right to shut this down immediately. The two campaigns agree to three in-person debates, and it makes no sense to have CNN hosting an event while their staff is also in Joe's basement operating his teleprompter.

Me neither.

My best explanation is that Trump’s internal polling shows him surging and he has nothing to gain from the exposure.

However that runs counter to all of the polls averaged by Real Clear Politics. If he is in fact behind it makes no sense to throw away the opportunity. Coming as it does in the wake of breaking off negotiations on the virus bailout monies, it seems illogical. I just don’t get it.
...
You do get it. You are just a little gun-shy to go out on the end of the limb and say it. Like Carlos Osweda said, President Trump would not cut off the G negotiations on the stimulus had he not known beyond a shadow of a doubt after looking at all of the internal polling and all of the possible scenarios he knows that he will indeed win. Yes that includes all of the shenanigans. He feels confident enough - and trusts his inner circle advisors enough - to make such a decision. In the same vein is his decision to not do the debate. Go out on the limb, NB, it will hold us.

The virtual debate will be nothing but a constant accusation that we are having a virtual debate because you caught the coronavirus.

How do we know if Joe, behind a mask, is talking or we hear a pre-recorded bunch of lies

Biden is going to say....whew....thank goodness.

Trump is "following the science". I have tested negative three times and have antibodies. I am not contagious and have immunity.

He'll ask Joe....Are you going to run the Whitehouse from your basement? Will we have to build hundreds of little basements near the Whitehouse for your people.

Well he is not by nature a politician so not sure he makes those calculations you’ve questioned. Perhaps he stands on principle.
