I have more confidence in business owners, particularly small business owners; and they employ the majority of Americans. If you work for some faceless corporate bureaucracy, then all bets are off. The larger an organization is the more insanely stupid the organization is. I find it amazing that those businesses survive in spite of themselves.
I’ve been waiting for them to offer me an incentive to retire, but they just won’t....
COBOL developers are still in demand to support those old systems.
Its not all about voting. The cultural decay is a product of the boomers.
Love it. I’ve been sauomg that for years.
As a small business owner, Thank You for your post.
My son just graduated from high school. Today, he took two college course finals and aced them. He was given less than 24 hours notice that he had to take the Finals today.
My son’s teachers told the class to stop playing around and making fun of my son because he effortlessly passed his classes. The teachers told the class that they will someday be asking him for a job.
Two months out of HS and is already a college sophomore. with a 3.0 GPA.
BTW - his mother fought cancer throughout his life and she passed away two years ago. He made no excuses and told no one, even his best friends that his mom was sick or died.
He wanted no pity or fake sympathy.
I am proud of my son!
At least in my industry I do not see a very capable group of younger people.
Yep, I figure in five more years, the kids should be on their own, and able to support me, LOL. That’s why I told them to study hard in the first place, because I have expensive tastes, heh heh. But I want to retire while I can still do vigorous activities like hiking, and hopefully, if I need something, I can Freelance in IT from time to time just to bring in some money. That’s basically what I am preparing now for.
Culling Boomers is about 20 years old.
The youngest Boomer is 56.
50-55 is all Gen-X
A big reason why companies were hesitant to hire over 50 was because Boomers were so bad at computers/technologies. That is slowly not becoming the case anymore as Xers grew up with most technologies found in office / work place environments.
I many ways Xers are better than Millennials/Zs because they grew up with computers which still dominate most work environments vs phones which Millennials mostly used.
....so pray prepare to follow me.
Ditto. We go through a lot of young ones here who
do not have work ethic or common sense. One out of 15 is a keeper. Very sad.
I am in my 50s and all the younguns know I’m the “go to guy” for all the new technologies. I constantly read books on new technologies and platforms, most of them are crap, but at least I know of them.
‘Many employers now prefer the older job candidates who are able. :)’
yeah, as part timers or consultants; they won’t invest in any benefits for them...
Yup...same happened to me.
But like others have said on this thread, I'm under no threat from the millenials. My work ethic is 10x the average millenial. Different generation. I don't complain and I don't care how much work comes at me. I just get it done. That's valuable in this day and age.
Only ignorant people blame a generation. The real destroyers of this country are the marxist/progressives of all generations. This started 100 years ago.
As the retiring engineer at the nuclear power plant told all his well-wishers: “ You can’t put too much water in a nuclear reactor.”
A week later, as he lays out on the beach of his retirement island facing west, other beaches are rising and looking at the faint odd glow from the east. The retired engineer notices, rises and turns to see the glow.
He nods his head, “Yup, you can’t put too much water in a nuclear reactor!”
Moral: If you are being retired, and are present in the area while doing so, leave your replacements with something to clean up, without a how to guide.
I left an office over 15 years ago of non-technical administrative types, with the various formulas for Amps, ohms, and volts as passwords, ahem, from my private taken-with-me notebook!
Lol..
.
Yeah this is a lot of panicking over nothing
At least wait for a problem to happen before worrying about it
