Bye, boomer: the coming cull of workers over 50
Marketwatch ^ | July 30 2020 | By Brett Arends

Uh-oh. Those of us who remember when ’80s music was new had better start bracing ourselves for those big-box-store greeter jobs earlier than we expected.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that the jobs market is probably heading for a massive, rolling shakeout. And that means plenty of employers may be using the cover of COVID-19 to get rid of lots of expensive older workers.

Age discrimination in the jobs market, which is supposedly illegal, goes up in recessions. Some employers take the opportunity to ax experienced workers who are paid a reasonable wage, and replace them with cheap, desperate kids who will put up with anything.

“But by all means let’s cut Social Security and raise the age when people can get it. Never mind that employers won’t hire people in their 60s. They still should have to wait till 69 or 70 for Social Security. After all, we have wars to fund, and government money doesn’t grow on trees””. , said Mitch McConnell and every other pre-Trump Republican

Not to mention H1b visa holders who will take what the bosses dish out and be grateful for it

I don’t know, this is definitely possible but the “kids” that have come through our place are horrible.
Unmotivated, lazy and quite honestly stupid.

At least in my industry I do not see a very capable group of younger people.

Exactly, but this has been going on for a long time. My husband was laid off from a major corporation when he was in his late fifties. Many other older workers were laid off, too, but they laid off enough younger employees to give them cover.

We managed over the next several years, but I get ticked off when the talking heads start blabbing about raising the retirement age. It’s difficult to find another job if you are in your fifties and sixties.

Hey, I could save Social Security tomorrow by making the retirement age 103. How does that sound to everyone?

Wishful thinking, boy. Many employers now prefer the older job candidates who are able. :)

From where, India? American kids aren't desperate, from what I've seen. Maybe their parents are desperate to get them off the couch, but...

The flip side of this is that older workers have been at the forefront of the pathetic fear-mongering that has destroyed our economy over the last few months. I suspect a lot of these older workers are going to be laid off simply because they’re still cowering under their beds and refuse to go back to work.

None of the indoctrinated Marxist millenneals want to work today, especially when they are getting $1000 extended unemployment checks and $1200 tax rebate checks. They want everything free so they have all this free time to “get down with the Revolution”

By the way, anyone ever hear that John Lennon song Revolution? This is the guy whose song “Imagine” the Marxists always praise as their national anthem, yet I heard that song “Revolution” today on the radio and the lyrics are completely anti-leftist. He sings count me out if you are into destruction and violence and count me out if you are into hate, and if you are into communism and Chairman Mao you are a loser. Wow! The King of the hippies is not down with the Revolution

It’s been going on for a long time. Enough so that companies have to issue an age report with layoffs. They’ll sacrifice enough youngins to make the percentages squeak by.

Millennials can only try to imitate the actions of the Boomers.

Ask any employer............ they’ll tell you that one Boomer is worth 5 Millennials.

I am in my late '50s, and I have felt it in IT land for a LONG time. Programmers don't have it so hard, but guys like me who work in support and operations know a lot about systems that no longer exist. I try not to whine (some of the younger ones whine), volunteer for drudge things as needed (e.g. decommissions), and help out with writing and non-IT skills when needed to fill out an assignment. Also, I have had the most success in areas that aren't cutting edge (e.g. banking).

Hmm, Hundreds of thousands or millions of middle aged men who now have little to no chance at gainful employment and basically “nothing to lose”.

There's a recipe for a real Revolution.

Well, when I was a kid, I probably wasn't the most productive worker. But...

Where I work, it is hit and miss. They spend a lot of time looking at their phones. They can't cross the street without GPS. It's hard to make their values correspond to the companies values. A lot of leftism too. Not everyone, of course, but a goodly number.

Last job I left they had to hire TWO young punks to replace me. So much for saving money.
