Cristobal has started to move toward the Gulf of Mexico after stalling over Campeche Mexico. Tropical Storm and storm surge watches have been issued along the Northern Gulf of Mexico coast.
Most of the convection is located to the east of the storm.

A swamp cooler evaporates water, no ice involved. Doesn’t really work well in Gulf states, the humidity of the air works against you. It’s more of a Southwest / desert thing.
I know. I was just bein’ silly. And by next week, some rain will be welcome!

We have Turkey Vultures here. They are HUGE! I recently saw one on the ground for the first time in my life; usually they’re at cruising at altitude.
They are MONSTERS! Run for your lives, LOL!

If you come across a time-travel machine, set the controls on reverse, and go back to 2019, then tell that deli clerk in Minnesota that I'll send them a real $20 bill for that crooked junkie's lousy smokes, when 2020 rolls around, and they encounter that guy, so they won't have to call 911. (That will be my gift to the world.) (Also, when you're back there, see what you can do about that Wuhan, China virus thing, before it spreads all around the world. And tell them all not to shut the whole world down for it.) Then, 2020 probably won't be so bad (at least not up till now - let's hope the second half of 2020 is a little brighter, otherwise, you'll have to fire up that time-travel machine again!)

So far, as of 2151 hours 5 JUN 2020, it looks like there will be only minimal or no threat at all from TS Cristobal for Central Alabama. Even if the current forecast track shifts further eastward, it’ll only bump up the rain chances in an already soggy-looking seven day forecast. This one is a non-starter for our weather stations.

We had an injured one walking around outside the house/shop last summer, just calm as you please. About 5’ tall (I didn’t get _that_ close)& bulky, for a bird. I think it had an injured wing. Ugly as sin, but non-threatening, even tho it really looks like a dinosaur. I guess nothing messes with them. Fascinating to see it upright & walking, tho. First time for me, too.
Lucky for us, it likes its food dead and rotting. Likely it tastes like what it eats. UGH!!!
We weren’t up there, but we knew weather was bad and the power outage was noted online from the local co-op. DH went up to check on the place and the neighbor told him how it happened. Our house/garage were fine.
We thought the storm took out the power, at first.
We have lots of them here. Sometimes they won’t even move out of the road if they are eating roadkill on back roads.
Maybe. "Eating size" channel catfish (best 2-3 lbs., IMO) out of good water can be delicious, and they'll eat almost anything (although it is not really true they PREFER dead stuff on the bottom, and the bigger they get, the more they become piscivores.) Free range chickens eat a lot of questionable stuff too, although they have SOME limits when it comes to decomposition. Dogs, oh, gee, while in the US they are not generally eaten, in other places they are, and dogs will literally eat crap, rotten eggs, etc. (Lucy from "Peanuts", it would seem, was right.)
Speaking of chickens, although turkey vultures seem big, the average rooster weighs as much or more. A 5 lb. turkey vulture is near record size. (The turkey vulture says: "Hey, I may look dumb, but I'm not dense"!)
Swamp cooler is an evaporative cooler that works well in hot dry climates. Refrigerated air works better in humid climates.
Ok, so a swamp cooler only works in the desert where there aren’t any swamps. Go figure.
Heh, that’s about right. I guess it’s called that because it makes the desert a little swampy, cooling it a little in the process.
ok. Good points. But I’ve cooked (and couldn’t eat, despite lashings of Grand Marnier) mud ducks. And wild catfish need to be in clean water and be fed something like cornmeal for awhile, don’t they? I’ve read that penguins and flamingos are both fishy-tasting and years ago, when we spent 4-6 weeks/year on Bonaire, NA, locals told us that back in the day, they ate flamingo and, yep....fishy.
OTOH, who would have guessed Mahi-mahi sushi would taste like rare beef tenderloin.
Are they really that light? I know the wingspan is large, but that bird looked to be nearly _my_ size (5’2” & weight redacted).

We are getting a piece of most of these stroms as they pass by thank God none are truly strong yet.this one is really big when yuo think about it covers hundreds of miles but not much in the strength category.
We are still lacking buoy wise here in the keys since NOAA has not repaired Mollasses reef light weather info yet which has been down forever.
The buoy system in the U.S. needs to be privatized we need to get NOAA out of the job of providing info since they clearly are as incompetent at doing that as they are with most other things they do.
Even Pulaski which is the Tortugas is down since NOAA is beyond incompetent its a vital buoy as these storms pass Florida.
I’m gonna steal this for our thread if you don’t mind....
