In 2000, I watched a Shuttle Launch from Cocoa Beach.

It was REALLY LOUD. LOL.

And above all, don't forget to ask God for His help.

Love the several verses beginning with "above all." We're to take seriously all of Scripture, but these verses snap us to attention. Our wedding verse was 1 Peter 4:8: "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."

Remember the 1980s TV movie “Salvage” with Andy Griffith, about a guy trying to build his own rocket and how the government did everything to stop him?

There was a movie about a dozen years ago called The Astronaut Farmer, with Billy Bob Thornton. He plays a guy who was in the astronaut program, some stuff comes up and he's not able to follow his dream that way. So he begins building a Mercury-model rocket and capsule on his farm. Government does everything it can to shut him down but he goes through with it anyway.

I remember it being pretty inspirational. Also family friendly.

This isn’t on the gargantuan scale of a Saturn V launch. Just looking at a few photos, the rocket and pad are more on the scale of the old Gemini launches. Essentially, a ballistic missile like a Titan or Atlas with a crew capsule atop. I agree with you that it will be impressive enough!

They had an interview earlier today with him and the admin of NASA. They asked Elon how he felt about sending two people up today and he took it very seriously, almost speechless but finally said he told the families “we’ve done everything we could to make sure they come back home to you”. I don’t think he takes it lightly at all.

I have both fox news turned on and watching the feed from SpaceX. SpaceX feed is more interesting TBH.

Is the President on any of the feeds or just the fixed cams?

I hear you about weather popping up there. I sailed on lakes for a couple of years and got caught more than once. White caps on the make kind of weather.

I haven’t seen him on the SpaceX feed yet. But I’ve been going back and forth and may have missed it.

You ignored that his Obama buds got to pick the winners and loser. Musk was a big Obama donor. That aside, I admit I am not sure what to think of a company that came out of basically nowhere and swept 60 years of launch industry aside. On the one hand, they have some good young folks working for them. On the other hand, they dont have the historical knowledge or lessons learned yet, and they have to relearn those at tax payer expense. Anyway, as I have said more than once now, I hope it goes well today.

The initial crew escape system was rejected as too costly, and the ejection seats of the early development machines were removed. That killed Challenger’s crew. After Challenger, NASA grudgingly fitted a rudimentary crew escape system.

There was no backup or rescue craft allowed because of funding and a management priorities, so Columbia’s crew was screwed after that foam strike. NASA didn’t bother inspecting the wing in orbit either, it turns out because they didn’t think they could get a rescue craft up to them - which the post-crash investigation found out they were wrong about. Further, the Shuttle’s unmanned flight systems were pretty rudimentary and a manned Shuttle would have had to be sent up. Thing is, we could have also asked the Russians for help if we knew our Shuttle couldn’t get down - they could have sent up a Soyuz or two to evacuate the thing.
