(Reuters) - The coronavirus has been a far deadlier threat in New Orleans than the rest of the United States, with a per-capita death rate much higher than in New York City. Doctors, public health officials and available data say the Big Easy’s high levels of obesity and related ailments may be part of the problem.

Obesity might be raising Michigan’s numbers, too.

Some 97% of those killed by COVID-19 in Louisiana had a preexisting condition, according to the state health department. Diabetes was seen in 40% of the deaths, obesity in 25%, chronic kidney disease in 23% and cardiac problems in 21%.

Now that is useful data.

Sure. Get that out there. After this is all over, some journalist will add up the numbers, and see that the virus had a disproportionate impact on a certain highly-privileged victim group, and Trump will be called racist.

It won’t be long before someone decides that it is not obesity but racism that is causing the problem.

New Orleans itself is a contaminated environment.

I’ve heard New Orleans has a large black population, both in actual numbers and as a percentage of the population.

It’s probably poitically incorrect to mention that in conjunction with this health emergency.

Was thinking these same thoughts this morning.

We are all at risk.

But, black communities in inner cities, Hispanics in densely populated areas seem to have a disproportionate risk. I wonder about Appalachian areas that have access issues with intensive medical care. However, most of these areas have the advantage of isolation, and not living on top of each other. Literally

Reuter’s. Who believes them? (Just parroting why I read on every FR thread.)

I think the viral load was probably higher due to multiple exposures AND high blood pressure a diabetes will get you killed.
