AT&T forcing thousands of American employees to train foreign replacements through H1B program
Breitbart ^ | 12/31/19 | John Binder

Posted on 12/31/2019 12:16:29 PM PST by david1292

AT&T is reportedly laying off thousands of American workers after forcing them to train their foreign replacements who have been imported through the H-1B visa program.

Every year, more than 100,000 foreign workers are brought to the U.S. on the H-1B visa and are allowed to stay for up to six years. There are about 650,000 H-1B visa foreign workers in the U.S. at any given moment. Americans are often laid off in the process and forced to train their foreign replacements, as highlighted by Breitbart News.

More than 85,000 Americans annually potentially lose their jobs to foreign labor through the H-1B visa program. Despite claims by the big business lobby, American workers who have been replaced by H-1B foreign workers say there is no shortage of talented and qualified citizens for high-paying, white-collar jobs.

In a new report by Axios, current and former AT&T employees said they are being laid off after being forced to train their H-1B foreign replacements: AT&T is poised to send thousands into the new year hunting for new jobs after assigning them to train their own foreign replacements, according to conversations with current and former workers and documents obtained by Axios. [Emphasis added]

Many have worked for the company for over a decade. They aren’t being offered severance or early retirement, and may not easily find a comparable job elsewhere with similar pay. [Emphasis added]

AT&T spokesperson Jim Kimberly told Breitbart News that employees are being helped to find other jobs inside the company.

“We are continuously working to be more efficient in our operations,” Kimberly said. “To the extent possible, we’re managing this staff adjustment through attrition and are helping employees find other positions within the company.”

My husband was forced to do this in 2008 when a very well known information retreval and law library company decided to off shore it’s IT work. Then they forced him to retire. He was 62 and had worked there for 30+ years.
This kind of thing is nothing new.

Wait, you are saying since it happened to your husband, it is nothing new? Are you saying we should not care? If that is your position, I disagree...

I am glad your husband was 62 and worked at his job for 30+
years. Fortunately, he was only 3 years away from retirement, and I am guessing he got a decent severance package for 30 years of employment back in 2008...

Sadly there are Freepers in their 40s and 50s who have had to endure this...loaded with financial obligations, yet ripe for age discrimination and minimal severance packages...and they were not 3 years away from retirement. Not saying it was easy for you, but it can be much worse...

It is not new, but it is expanding in breadth and depth... rate of increase is increasing too...

This is a travesty, and it is destroying more and more middle class careers.

the tech came to update my router. He had to call the same service number customers use to call in an issue. He had to wait, just like the rest of us smucks, to have his issue resolved.

Yep, we'd get those calls.

Sadly it wasn’t new back then. It was at least a decade or so in progress by 2008

This is America. NOT INDIA.

You forgot their leering at and coming on to any American woman they encounter, and their truly ripe body odor.

Re: FYI: Offshoring and H-1B imports are different things.

True

But H-1B’s are often used as on-site support to enable offshoring.

Having traveled rather extensively in India twice I am well familiar with the vacuous stare. Without a hint of a smile, just this dull, mirthless look, assessing everything you are wearing I suppose. Nowadays, I am seeing almost the same thing from the tourist parents of obvious H1B recipients. And hardly a word of English, of course

What a POS comment Bob. So we can just throw young Americans under the bus. We’ll survive. F that.

I just read a thread about Americans not having kids, THESE THINGS ARE RELATED BOB.

%%%%%%%%%%
AMEN.

Plus don’t forget H-1B’s are used for ALL STEM FIELDS.

If we have to train them, they aren’t direct replacements and shouldn’t be in the country.

They only laid off Americans and kept all the Indians even though the Americans were more competent.

The upper management ghouls who pull these stunts fully intend to be elsewhere when the chickens come home to roost.

When I’ve finally gotten through to an ATT customer rep; they are usually Filipino in the Philippines.. Since I’ve been there; we tend to talk a bit about their country and I get the customer support I need.

It’s always 100% wrong-headed to force workers to train their replacements then lay them off. The corporate world is heartless; almost satanic sometimes.

I have worked with hundreds of Indians and I’d say 80% are future Democrats. Only problem is they are cheap and don’t like paying taxes so once they find what the Dims want to do with the money it starts them thinking. So actually 50% vote Democrat when they know the truth.

That said most don’t read US sources for news. They also like CNN.

It seems that the Indians place the inflection on the last syllable of every word. You get used to it after a while.

“Please don’t cast other FReepers’ arguments as something they are not.”

I’m open minded, how about you tell us who NOT voting straight-ticket Republican doesn’t enable Democrats, which is what I responded to?

Unless there’s a viable political party that I’ve never heard of, it’s difficult to imagine anything OTHER than enabling Democrats by not voting Republican in November elections.

But, as I said, I’m open-minded = please enlighten me.

Well, you’re certainly not TOO open minded. Otherwise you would not engage in your strange DEFLECTION.. This thread is about the H-1B visa program and is certainly not about not voting for Republican candidates.

The H-1B program is NOT good for America and is NOT good for Americans. Many things the Chamber of Commerce wants are NOT good for America.

Actually I was responding to THIS COMMENT (go see for yourself):

““You could lop 90% of them into the same party, so what difference does it make?””

To put it another way, the election is TOO IMPORTANT to me to let “they’re all the same, so why bother voting” type comments slide, and in some cases, they’re flat-out trolling (which they now call “Rolcon”)

It may have been fashionable with certain academics, but human equality as a basis for business decisions is still totally flawed as a concept. No two people reading this are really, interchangeable or equal. The very concept is an insult to every one of us, as it fores a form of ignorance of all that can make any individual unique in a positive sense.

Your job loss may well have been the result of the false assumptions promoted by egalitarian make believe; but both employers & employees are victims of the make believe absurdity foisted on society by academic theorists. The damage used to be contained by the forces of traditional social cohesion; but these forces are now specifically targetted.

Forcing an existing employee to train their H1-B replacement is prima facie proof their employer is violating the law.

Exactly.

Having people already in the job to train their replacements is proof that there are already qualified Americans who can do the work, which makes hiring a H-1B worker for that job illegal.

In fact, the American incumbent is, by definition, MORE qualified since the H-1B worker requires training. Proper use of the H-1B program would dictate that the worker already has the required skills and can step into the role immediately until qualified Americans can be found.
