The judge in the murder trial of a former Dallas police officer charged with shooting and killing a black neighbor has taken the rare step of sequestering the jury.

Former officer Amber Guyger, who is white, has told investigators in Texas she mistook Botham Jean, 26, for an intruder after she mistakenly entered his central Dallas apartment one floor above hers.

The shooting in September last year, one of a series of high-profile killings of unarmed black men and teens by white US police, sparked protests, particularly because prosecutors initially moved to charge Guyger, 31, with manslaughter, a charge that carries a lesser sentence.

It really doesn’t matter what you think. Only the jury matters.

“Her story doesn’t make sense.”

Agreed. Unless she was drunk or on drugs. And if she was, what’s she doing being a COP?

Good move by the Judge, though. Maybe all perceived ‘hate crimes’ need to be handled this way?

I live here in Dallas. She’ll be found not guilty. It wasn’t murder. It was manslaughter. Dallas DA has overcharged her due to public pressure. They have screwed up. The shooting was not premeditated. She should have not shot him. It’s manslaughter and they didn’t charge her with that. She’ll get found not guilty and Dallas will be to blame for it.

...

Thanks for speaking up.

Overcharging can lead to complete acquittal.

“...one of a series of high-profile killings of unarmed black men and teens by white US police,..”

Houston police don’t discriminate...they murdered that white couple and their dog awhile back.

She also had a hard time counting to two, the floor she lived on. The guy’s apartment was on three.

I live here too and it was manslaughter determined by the Texas Rangers who investigated the case instead of the Dallas PD. Then the Grand Jury mysteriously changed the charge to murder at the same time many visitors suddenly came to Dallas.

The girl made a terrible mistake and she will pay the rest of her life no matter the verdict. But I don’t get how a charge can be changed by a judge or Grand Jury to murder. Are they investigators now?

I think the trial should have been moved out of Dallas and the judge is refusing to do that so she can be on tv every day. Maybe she will get a higher judgeship after this. The media has paraded the grieving family all weekend and they have already convicted her.

Most people I know agree she can’t get a fair trial here.

the OJ Simpson verdict was what it was because they just wanted out of there

The simpson verdict was what it was because the black jurors were going to cut him loose, regardless.

And the white jurors just wanted out of there.

She was not drunk or on drugs. IIRC, she was coming off a double shift. Late at night. Dead tired.

Kemp denied a motion to exclude evidence from Guyger’s texts and phone calls...

That is an interesting tidbit.

She’d get a better deal just admitting her fault and accept the judge’s decision.

I don’t know. This is why I posted a picture of that judge. She looks mean. She’s going to eat that little white girl alive when it comes to sentencing. For killing a black guy.

Double shift would be 18-20 hours.

I’ve been up for 72 straight before - Thanks, Uncle Sam, and I still found my way home to my own house. And I didn’t shoot anyone when I got home, either.

I didn’t even kick the dog. ;)

I agree with you too. She made a mistake. It was not pre meditated. The press has ginned up a frenzy. It should have been moved outside the county.

On the bright side, they’ll be safe.
Security at the hotel will be handled by the Dallas PD.
Just don’t turn the music up...

Roger that.

Something wrong with a system which affords more freedom to defendants than to jurors.
