Colt to end production of AR-15 rifles for personal use
The Hill ^ | 09/19/19 | RACHEL FRAZIN

Gun manufacturer Colt announced Thursday that it will no longer produce and sell rifles such as the AR-15 for personal use.

Colt President and CEO Dennis Veilleux said in a statement that the company's "significant" law enforcement and military contracts "are absorbing all of Colt’s manufacturing capacity for rifles."

He said that "the market for modern sporting rifles has experienced significant excess manufacturing capacity."

"Given this level of manufacturing capacity, we believe there is adequate supply for modern sporting rifles for the foreseeable future," he added.

What Colt firearms are the military and LE using? I’m retired military and LE and I never saw a Colt firearm except for the 1911, and that was over 40 years ago.

Hasn’t COLT been having financial issues for a while now? Are they trying to finish off the company?

Colt supplies AR-15s for law enforcement. I had one and my department had dozens of them.

I saw a number of Colt M16A2s back in my day, but the one I spent the most time with was an old H&R that had been converted from an -A1 and had a re-stamped lower.

I read it to mean that with so much competition to produce AR-15s, they can’t compete effectively and make them for the military and LEOs.

IIRC, Colt tried this once before and reliance on the LEO and military market alone nearly finished them...

There are better buys in ARs out there anyway...So long Colt...

There is no real need to announce this save for virtue signaling.

Great.

Now the manufacturers are going to protect us from evil guns too?

Give me a fricken break!

How to kill brand loyalty in one fell swoop.

So why is law enforcement and military buying significance production when the military has said to have gone to something else? There are so many aftermarket manufactures that the supply will stay normal.

Colt knows they will have very little negatives blowback from saying this. They can do their virtue signalling and since their customer isnt average people but govt, they know it doesnt matter if average folks view it as a negative.

Yeah, they recently went bankrupt again. However, at this point pretty much only law enforcement and foreign militaries are buying their products - that and the few aged Colt fanboys they have left. The civilian arms marketplace isn’t buying their substandard overpriced crap, not when there are companies offering better products at better prices *and* they don’t have a recent two decade plus history of pissing all over their civilian customers like Colt.

Actually, they tried that from the 90s on. Colt supported much gun control as they believed their customers were government.

Colt recently lost their last government contracts with the US government to Remington and then FN. They can’t make any headway in the civilian market for many reasons. All they have left is the idiots (as opposed to normal sane officers) in law enforcement that keep buying their crap.

That's how I see it.

Colt wants to show 'they care' and hope it takes the target off their back.

I have two Colt AR’s I wonder if they will increase in value? Rugers are going for about $480 which is a good deal.

The local cops here have Colt M4s or equivalent for patrol rifles. Not sure of the exact model, but do know they’re Colts.

I bought the Kel-Tec SU-16 instead. U hate their pistols but their rifle is fine. Uses standard AR mags and capable of .223 or 5.56.
