Boris Johnson loses Commons majority as Tory MP defects

LONDON — The governing Conservative party lost its majority today as one of its MPs defected to join the anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats.

Phillip Lee sat on the opposition benches on Tuesday as Prime Minister Boris Johnson stood to deliver a statement in the House of Commons. The move increases pressure on Johnson, whose majority was already looking shaky, but does not automatically trigger an election because that would require a separate vote.

Answered my own question. The Conservatives had a minority government with 310 seats but a working majority in Commons by entering into an agreement with the Democratic Unionists who held 15 seats. With this defection Johnson has 324 seats out of 650.

The breed do not respect the very concept of a nation. Borders are one of many concepts being deliberately ignored--along with loyalty, honor, decency & love. Sadly, the misdirected education conditions against even awareness of what is missing.

Johnson would almost certainly have anticipated this happening. He more or less went out of his way last week to prod the Conservative "Remainers" like this one into jumping ship. It justifies a snap election just as the Conservatives have gained a sizeable lead in the polls.

Parliamentary politics are a whole different beast compared with our relatively static constitutional republic. And Brits, like most people, gravitate to decisive leaders.

There are oceans of influence and money available to sellout the British people.

What is the point of having a referendum in Britain? The people’s voice will just be ignored by the politicians.

Just like here in the U.S., most elected representatives do no represent the people who vote for them they represent the people who pay them.

Much like referendums in California, where a liberal judge will literally set aside an entire election and then just create the new laws/rules by which the State will operate!

"Does that make Boris the shortest PM in history?

Kind of like the film "Darkest Hour".

The elites have no respect for the voice of the people.

They see themselves as the high priests who make decisions for everyone else. Allowing them to get away with ignoring us only emboldens them to keep abusing their positions.

Just like the people voted to keep marriage normal, and then the whiners cried, moaned, and ran to their judges in order to throw out what the people wanted.

Just because the judges have spoken and made new rights does not mean the people have changed their mind what marriage really is.

Three years ago the UK voted for Brexit.

Today, they are NO CLOSER to Brexit than the day before they took the vote.

I see. Thanks for the info.
As a main trading partner with the USA, I hope the Brits get their Brexit later this year. It may be rough going for a fiscal year or two, but I think the economy will recover.
Better that they resist becoming just another cog in the border-free EU machine.

What is it? Two years since voters in England voted for Brexit, and since then the ruling class has delayed and fought implementation at every step. It’s almost as if the peoples’ vote is nothing more than a sham. The ruling class does what they damn well please.

You sure have that one right.

"The will of the people" is a broken down cliche of the past, especially in California.

“...And what was Phillip Lee offered for this betrayal?...”
Probably something along the lines that John Roberts was offered for oDongoCare.

“...Three years ago the UK voted for Brexit. Today, they are NO CLOSER to Brexit than the day before they took the vote....”
Sure looks that way.
But here, three years ago, we elect Trump to drain the swamp. Today we are NO CLOSER to an indictment, arrest, hanging etc. than the day before we voted him in.
The communists here (and there) have managed to muster a huge amount of power.
