NYC Mayor de Blasio: ‘We Are Going to Ban’ Glass and Steel Skyscrapers

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on MSNBC Monday morning his city will ban “inefficient” steel and glass skyscrapers as part of their Green New Deal.

While Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal sputtered in Washington D.C., her home city of New York has embraced key pillars of the plan.

When asked about it on Morning Joe, de Blasio outlined the proposal.

“We are making the Green New Deal come alive here in New York City,” he said. “It’s three very basic ideas. One, the biggest source of emissions in New York City is buildings.”

Renewable energy plan started by Bloomberg must have been read by Kaiser Wilhem under the infuence of LSD.

The last verifiable elec use number circa 2002 was 55,000 gigawatts annually. Ton of high rises constructed since then.

Good luck with that.

“...Agua Caliente, the largest photovoltaic solar power facility in the world, was completed last week in Arizona.”

“The plant comprises more than five million solar panels that span the equivalent of two Central Parks in the desert between Yuma and Phoenix. It generates 290 megawatts of power....”

290 mega watts...

Winter is coming.

I read years ago was the only reason the Twin Towers collapsed was because BOTH towers were hit. That the fire suppression system would have put out the fire in ONE tower, but was not designed to put out a fire in both towers at the same time.

Keep in mind the 1991 bomb attack took out most of the parking garage under the one building, basically 5 floors and the building still stood.

If ya can’t build up, ya have to build out. This will cause loss of green space, wider traffic patterns, more infrastructure, and a larger carbon footprint.

But banning sky scrapers sounds like a good thing,....right?

There was an article posted in FR that said that if you add up all the inputs, electric cars were more co2 generators than diesel. I am sure this idiot will propose buildings that sound green smart on paper and make latte sipping dinks feel fuzzy all over, but will prob be more co2 intensive when compared down the track

B25 = 20,000 lbs
Cruise speed 230 mph
974 fuel capacity

Flight 11
767-200 ER
MTOW 395,000 lbs
530 mph cruise speed
24,000 gal fuel

Flight 175
767-200
MTOW 315,000 lbs
16,700 gal fuel

HUGE differences in planes

916 gallons of fuel (at full)
vs 24,000 or 16,700 at full

The B25 was flying from Bedford Mass. to Newark Airport.
probably had 200 gallons of fuel on board.
It was on personnel transport, with only 3 people on board.

The two 767’s were freshly fueled from Boston, heading to Los Angeles.

Simple economics:

Increase the cost of building in Manhattan, then outlying prices will increase sequentially as affordability spreads further from the center.

As expensive as is NYC, without tall buildings all of the boroughs would be desolate of all but 1%ers.

See this 2011 article from the formerly interesting Atlantic Monthly:

How Skyscrapers Can Save the City
