Hagia Sophia to Be Turned Into Mosque in Response to US Shift on Golan - Erdogan

ANKARA (Sputnik) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday he planned to turn landmark Hagia Sophia, a former Greek Orthodox cathedral in Istanbul, into a mosque after this month’s elections in response to the US policy shift on the Golan Heights. "After municipal elections, it [temple] will be converted back into a mosque from a museum. As US president Trump declares Jerusalem the capital of Israel and the Golan Heights an Israeli territory, Turkey will give an adequate response as the rotating chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation", Erdogan said while aired on television.

The statement comes after US President Donald Trump said last week it was time to recognise the Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, an Israeli-occupied strip of land in Syria.

United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov, on screen, addresses the Security Council, from Jerusalem, at United Nations headquarters, Friday, Dec. 8, 2017.

He signed a declaration to this effect on 25 March. The temple was turned into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of the Byzantine Empire. It was converted into a museum by Turkey’s secular founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1934 and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Greece has condemned Erdogan’s plans for the former cathedral as a sign of disrespect.

Goofy.

Is there anyone who seriously believes that Obama’s pal Erdogan wasn’t going to do this regardless?

That's a shame. She was great on 77 Sunset Strip and Highway Patrol.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is finally dead and the Turks might as well be too.

Isn’t there something sitting on the Temple Mount that could be repurposed as well?

And given back to the Greeks. That could have been done as recently as 1918. Not easy, but doable. At that time the city was occupied by the Western powers.

I know first hand that Turks can’t stand Erdogan.

It would be a relatively easy matter to get rid of Erdogan via sanctions, specifically, a blockade of oil imports to Turkish ports would have the countryside aflame in weeks.

No more Erdogan.

For those that don’t know them, Americans would find most Turks to be reasonable and straight up. There’s a long history that has formed this aspect of their society.

And most Turks are respectful of Christian history just as Egyptians are respectful of Jewish history. I doubt the Turkish society is strongly onboard with Erdogan here.

been there a couple of times on business. granted, on the west side...more “hellenized” than the interior, but you are correct as to your assessment of the people.

I visited several places there, including the ruins of Ephesus...it is stunning.

the food was excellent, too. Enjoyed my visits there, immensely.

I wonder if the Russian oligarchs and EU elites will stop vacationing in the Turkish Mediterranean resorts when all the formerly liberated people become burka wearing slaves to Erogadan?

Yes, Ephesus is amazing. The whole history is amazing.

In terms of hygiene, food safety, general cleanliness, Turkey is far better than Greece. But in terms of instruction, it is Hellenistic history that is taught, emulated, respected and meshed with Islamic history in the schools and universities of Turkey.

Still, the rural farmers, although simple and plain, they respect politeness towards all including foreigners rather than jihad. All these elements make for a safe society and a pleasant place to visit.

There are many Christians native to Turkey still living there. This move by Erdogan must be very distressing to them.

Poor misinformed and mistaken Hostage

Turkey (Murderous Ottoman Empire) is 98% muslim, and Muslims love murderous strongman daddies like Erdogan.

Turkey proudly MURDERED 1.5 MILLION defenseless Armenian Christians to satisfy their Islamic bloodlust during WWI.

Didn’t you know that Turkey’s population is 98.6 percent Muslim?

Turkey is a predominantly Islamic country, where up to 99% of Turks are Muslim.
