President Trump flexed his veto for the first time in his administration Friday, rejecting Congress attempt to end his border emergency declaration and halt wall construction.
Surrounded by angel moms who have lost children to illegal immigrant violence, Mr. Trump called the attempt to stop wall construction reckless and dangerous.
Today I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it, he said.
He was moving with striking speed, rejecting the legislation just a day after it cleared the Senate on a 59-41 vote. It had previously cleared the House 245-182.
Now Congress will get a chance to overturn his veto, but the strong backing Mr. Trump got from Republicans suggests he has enough support in either chamber to sustain him.
As he announced his veto, Mr. Trump described the dire border situation he said spurred him last month to declare an emergency and to claim $3.6 billion in Pentagon construction money to be used for wall-building.
People hate the word invasion, but thats what it is, he said.
In addition to the mothers, Mr. Trump was accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and new Attorney General William Barr.
Mr. Barr said the presidents emergency declaration is solidly grounded in law, while Mr. Pence said it kept faith with voters.
Youre keeping your word by vetoing this legislation, the vice president told him.
Democrats hope to sway Republicans to oppose Mr. Trump before an override attempt.

It may help them get re-elected in their states by taking fire away from media.

It makes me sick to know there are so-called Republicans who continue to vote for these scumbags instead of kicking their arses back into the gutter in the primaries.
With every passing day, I feel more embarrassed that I ever voted for John McCain in 2008 and Mittens Romney in 2012. My gorge rises at the thought.
...............................
I’m not surprised since they are two of the most despicable people ever to set foot on Capitol Hill.
Extermination of these invaders is what this will ultimately come to.
...........................................
Please God let that be true, and let me do all I can to make it happen! And may those in our Government who aided them suffer the same fate.
My GOP Congresswoman Herrera-Beutler was a Never Trumper from the start, she wrote in Paul Ryan for Pres in the general election and voted for this resolution the other day. Pathetic.
.....................................
So form a committee or join one and work to get her stupid arse primaried out of office at the next election.
Yay!
PROMISES KEPT !!!!
Now if we could get some reason to sink into Romney’s sister-wife Ann Coulter
I know they do hate the word, but not sure why. Invasion is what it is.
Don Veto !!
It should be MANDATORY for every single member of Congress to personally make a 72 hour tour of the entire border & spend time with the Border Patrol & the Texas Rangers.
Then, they should have to write a 2000 word essay on what they saw.
They (repub voters) keep electing them because they are probably most electable choice in the state. A candidate like Roy Moore feels good to the base, but the result was we get Doug Jones the democrat who will NEVER support Trump ever. A RINO is likely support Trump 50%+. So it is either 0 or 50-50.
Romney, Collins, Murkowski & Lee all despise Trump, so republicans lose either by 51:49 or 59:41.
Makes no difference. 41 is enough to fail override of Trump’s veto. We can live without 49.
Yep, but I’m not sure all of them can write.
Its veto proof.
good.
I think we could have some fun with that. Email/call their offices every week, ask what they've done that week for funding for the wall.
Some blonde twit on Fox and Friends just called Trump a white supremacist for this (or, rather, reported that “some people” are calling him that - thereby planting the idea in people’s heads). Way to go enemedia.
Although my own Senator Tillis voted correctly, he almost didn’t. He felt the heat of our messages.
I sent him a message this morning recognizing his support for “separation of powers”.
I asked him when he was going to propose legislation dissolving the regulatory agencies that enact laws by executive fiat.
I await his reply.
Open borders!
Take away gun rights.
Sounds like a plan!/s
Soon the only re4medy will be a continuous Turkey Shoot all along the Southern border.
