President Trump flexed his veto for the first time in his administration Friday, rejecting Congress attempt to end his border emergency declaration and halt wall construction.
Surrounded by angel moms who have lost children to illegal immigrant violence, Mr. Trump called the attempt to stop wall construction reckless and dangerous.
Today I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it, he said.
He was moving with striking speed, rejecting the legislation just a day after it cleared the Senate on a 59-41 vote. It had previously cleared the House 245-182.
Now Congress will get a chance to overturn his veto, but the strong backing Mr. Trump got from Republicans suggests he has enough support in either chamber to sustain him.
As he announced his veto, Mr. Trump described the dire border situation he said spurred him last month to declare an emergency and to claim $3.6 billion in Pentagon construction money to be used for wall-building.
People hate the word invasion, but thats what it is, he said.
In addition to the mothers, Mr. Trump was accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and new Attorney General William Barr.
Mr. Barr said the presidents emergency declaration is solidly grounded in law, while Mr. Pence said it kept faith with voters.
Youre keeping your word by vetoing this legislation, the vice president told him.
Democrats hope to sway Republicans to oppose Mr. Trump before an override attempt.

Do it like Reagan!
The ‘Dirty Dozen’ invasion deniers.
“Mr. Barr said the presidents emergency declaration is solidly grounded in law,
Keebler elf would never have said that when he was Elf AG..
A piece of anti-Trump Kabuki theater bites the dust.
The national emergency declaration stands.
The democrats and Republicans slashed the Defense budget so much it crippled the military, and now they claim they are concerned about short-changing the military.
I agree, this is an encouraging sign.
Congress never opposed a national emergency declaration before.
This is all about TDS not about the situation at the southern border.
Explains the recent surge here by the ‘bots again.
Republicans side with Desperate Democrats?
“This is all about TDS not about the situation at the southern border.”
Our domestic enemies KNOW they are at war against America and all for which we stand.
YES! YES! YES! Thank you President Trump!!!!!
It’s not over. These same Repub defectors better work their little as*** off to get money in the budget for a wall.
They were alllegedly concerned about presidential constitutional overreach but I didnt hear a peep from Republicans when Obama used his pen to make the law of the land.
Its just hypocrisy. I expected it from Democrats but you have Republicans who loathe our President.
Their vote told us a lot more about them than it did about Trump.
