Vitamin D Supplements Aren’t Living Up To Their Hype

Recent studies say taking extra amount is of the nutrient may not be a boon for every body

Magazine issue: Vol. 195, No. 2, February 2, 2019, p. 16

In the supplement world, vitamin D is a bit like a Kardashian. Its fame seemed to come out of nowhere about a decade ago, garnering so much press so fast that it’s hard to remember a time when people weren’t talking about it.

Vitamin D had long been known for protecting bones, but its star began to rise in the early 2000s after researchers made connections hinting that vitamin D was good for a lot more than our skeletons. It appeared to help protect against a lengthy list of ailments, including multiple sclerosis, asthma, depression, heart disease and cancer. The vitamin also was said to improve athletic performance.

Organizations like the Vitamin D Council — the 2003 brainchild of a psychiatrist who became a vitamin D enthusiast — began to actively promote the benefits to the public and to physicians, while selling test kits for vitamin D blood levels. Doctors checked for it; patients demanded testing. Researchers latched on.

But with more research comes more scrutiny, and most recently, a series of seemingly tarnishing findings. On November 10, the New England Journal of Medicine published the largest study so far to test vitamin D supplements’ protection against cancer and heart disease. The results were generally interpreted as inconclusive at best and disappointing at worst. One 2017 review of the evidence for cardiovascular benefits concluded that studies of people taking vitamin D “have failed to show clear improvements in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity or lipid parameters.”

Even the vitamin’s reputation for helping bones took a hit last April from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

I don’t have a problem with it, but I don’t think it or any supplement is any cure-all.

I use 2000IU per day. It is the only supplement I still take since 2011 when I tried my parents’ new doctor, who it turns out is an alternative complementary quack who tests absolutely everything Nd then tells us we need so many weird supplements. Which conveniently he sells in his “apothecary” across the hall.

Frankly, I don’t mind taking it, but I have not gotten healthier. In fact, I’m much worse. I went to him with old headaches mostly from an accident, and GERD and colitis, albeit well controlled. I have MANY more problems since that time, including this year with undiagnosed as yet torso pain.

I think we’re wasting a lot of money on things that don’t really need boosting. Not sure I should bother with D anymore.

Oh please. Mayo Clinic is one of the greatest hospitals in the world. Yeah, I’m going to look at some site with prejudiced viewpoints vs a great hospital.

“The VA had me taking 50,000 IU a day at one time.”

Same here. It gave me hypercalcemia. I had whole bone pain in my right thigh bone, left ulna, and a finger bone. I already had 5 calcium build-up spots in my arteries. After doing my own research, I found out calcium was being leached out of my bones and being deposited elsewhere. The same mechanism in how rat poison kills rats. It will be a long time before I believe another VA doctor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRLok37KPd8&app=desktop

I agree whole heartedly on vitamin D along with vitamin K-2 You also may want to check out or compare he benefits of Berberine against Metformin. One way of doing it is to look up a good brand of Berberine on Amazon and then read all the commentary from people who are using it. Not only does it help to bring blood sugar under control but also helps against leaky gut syndrome. Well just a thought, make your own case.

Just because there are shysters who overplay vitamins doesn’t mean that vitamins cant be effective. On the other hand the Pharma/Medico/FDA cult has a vested interest in keeping people sick, also for profit.

You can tailor a study to prove anything.

Take the Walmart reference visit. There are several sizes of D3 capsules, There are no D2 capsules as I recall.

Blam first told us of the benefits of D3 walmart sold it as 500 and 1,000 units. That soon gave way to 2,000 units and now 5,000 units.

Walmart sells what people buy

——get outside in the sun more......

but you see, that is the point. the entire point

In the winter one can not get enough sun. It’s winter. There often is no sun and days are short.

That is the very reason people get colds. they do not get enough sun and therefore not enough D.

That is probably because you need to take more than just D. K2 and a good absorbable calcium supplement, probably magnesium and selenium too.

People get colds from people who have colds since they tend to stay indoors at work or the malls.............

My Doctor insisted on testing my levels a few months ago. I wanted to decline, but also wanted to know my levels.

Didn’t say a word about what I do for a living. Doctor called a few days later with the results and told me I could back off on the Vit D supplements.

There was dead silence on the other end of the phone when I said I didn’t supplement. I loved that pregnant pause. I waited and waited and finally the doctor asked what I did.

I explained that I walk about 5-7 dogs a day for 30 minutes at a time and keep sunscreen use to a minimum! He laughed really hard! He said, “that explains why you aren’t on any meds at your age.” Of course the sunscreen use thing came up and I asked him...has there been studies showing the effects of sunscreen chemicals causing cancer vs. the natural benefits of the sun preventing cancer.

We agreed there’s a balance in there somewhere and that we all die eventually.

...and they tell diabetics to keep eating CARBS.

"They" is the American Diabetes Association and their cookbook is full of high carb recipes. Eat a bowl of white rice and see how fast your blood sugar goes up. They don't want diabetes cured anymore than they want cancer cured. How much stock in insulin do they have?

In honor of this thread, I just took another D3 and threw in a biotin for good measure. That’s on top of my normal daily vitamins.

"Had younger women only taken this advice to go topless for 30 min during their lunch breaks they would have such stronger bones today,.....I would have encouraged them, but they would always think I had ulterior motives. Alas."

A side question - are these Russians out there vitamin D-ing, or just freeze-flashing in the snow?

I also take 4000 IU’s of Vitamin D3 daily.

I have not had a cold or cough or flu for several (maybe 5) years.

Yes, lots of conflicting opinions on nutrition out there.

Here is one more that you may find worth looking into. I came across it on U Tube while watching a lecture by the great Jordan Peterson whom many on the right have great respect for. I gave it a try (7 months now)and can vouch for it,(just got results of last blood test yesterday = very good results).

If you have common health issues then please, check out the “carnivore” diet for yourself....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isIw2AN_-XU

The big advantage is the diet’s simplicity, and several beneficial side effects, including absolutely no need for any vitamins or supplements - nada, zilch, bupkis. Acid Reflux disappears. Lose weight without effort - dont have to count calories or exercise at all. It works for a lot of people ... the carnivore diet, all meat, no fruits or veggies to affect your digestive tract and hurt your joints.
