Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said Thursday that his office is exploring whether disinformation tactics deployed against Republican Roy Moore during last year's special election violated state campaign laws and said he was worried that the operation could have affected the closely fought Senate race.
"The information is concerning," Marshall, a Republican, said in a phone interview. "The impact it had on the election is something that's significant for us to explore, and we'll go from there."
Moore lost the election to his Democratic rival, Sen. Doug Jones.
Marshall, who said he learned of the disinformation campaign called Project Birmingham through news reports over the past two weeks, stopped short of announcing a formal investigation but said his office was beginning to gather information about the effort.
"We're planning to explore the issue further," Marshall said.
Internet billionaire Reid Hoffman apologized on Wednesday for giving $750,000 to a group, American Engagement Technologies, that allegedly had ties to an effort to undermine support for Moore and bolster Jones. The new senator has called for a federal investigation into Project Birmingham.

Never mind the fact that everything he did was legal and moral, fake Russian bots from the DNC did damage, and between McConnell and the Democrats, $50 million was spent against him in that campaign, along with fake allegations, to boot.
These FReepers are Class 1 Hillary butt suckers who eat excrement for dessert.
I speak about people like you in post 41.
Enjoy!
Post 41 is for you, then.
If you have a LinkedIn account, then vote with your feet.
........and??????
I support him with my money, instead.
That matter a heck of a lot more than some stupid thing on LinkedIn.
Please explain the insinuation in your post. Is it the usual tired, outdated and ignorant slander against the intelligence of Alabamians?
Sorry to disappoint you goofball, but I voted for Moore and Trump, both times holding my nose before and taking a shower after.
I doubt Alabama has a law banning “disinformation” in political campaigns or that it’s constitutional if they do.
Someone in that chain of custody of the $$$ from Silicon Valley to Alabama broke a law and/or violated a provision of the IRS code for tax-exempt foundations, IMHO.
“Never mind the fact that everything he did was legal and moral”
And this is coming from someone who supported Judge Moore throughout all of his judicial controversies, supported him in the primary (something that I now regret; either Brooks or Strange would have skunked Jones (even if the RATs spent $50 million against them, although they likely would have written off the race) and would have been fine Senators, albeit not as good as I thought that Judge Moore would be), and urged conservatives to walk on broken glass to vote for him in the general. But if you want to add me to your little list of FReepers who don’t think that Judge Moore’s mistakes actually were brilliant tactics, be my guest.
All of Moores past was known by folks in his state. It was the GOPE and Democrat spending ($50 million+), false allegations, and $750,000 on bots by the LinkedIn founder (surpassing what is alleged was spent by Russians on bots for Trump by hundreds of thousands of dollars).
“All of Moores past was known by folks in his state.”
But whatever, yea for Senator Jones, at least he isn’t Brooks or Strange! </s>
