GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) - A Wayne County woman could face charges after sheltering more than two dozen pets as Hurricane Florence impacted North Carolina.
Tammie Hedges runs Crazys Claws n Paws, a non-profit group which helps low-income families with veterinary bills, pet supplies and other needs.
Shes in the process of converting a warehouse space along Route 581 into a shelter. With the storm approaching last week, she offered it as an option for pets to stay.
The goal was to make sure they were not out there drowning, Hedges said. We had an elderly couple, they were evacuating that afternoon, and there was no way they could take 18 animals with them.
Through donations, Hedges brought in crates, food and other supplies to help the animals get through the storm. She said volunteers stayed with the animals 24 hours a day.
She said there were 27 animals there in all, including 17 cats and 10 dogs.
On Monday, after the storm had passed, she said she got a call from Wayne Countys animal services manager Frank Sauls regarding the animals.
She said he told her, You can voluntarily hand over the animals, or I can go get a warrant.

I’m beginning to think our country would run better with no government at all.
Idiotic bureaucrats.
It is petty authoritarian douchebags like this who cause people to loathe government.
I’m sure a lot of people did things that were technically illegal under the emergency conditions of the storm. To jump on this person who donated so much effort on a technicality is ridiculous. They should give HER a medal and FIRE the asshole bureaucrat behind her persecution.
Sauls sounds like he needs an attitude adjustment or just plain fired.
LOL..."unpaid citizen volunteers" have a better track record than the paid government tit-suckers. See "Cajun Navy" and many, many other groups.
Better Call Sauls
a few choice words.
That is a bunch of BS and area residents should tar and feather whoever is threatening charges.
This kind of bureaucratic over-reach needs to stop and the only way to stop it is for the citizenry to let their voices be heard and publicly embarrass officials involved.
It worked against the officials in that small western Oklahoma town and the cop who gave a ticket to a 3-yr-old for peeing in the yard. After the public outcry, the mayor issued a public apology and retracted the ticket.
Wayne County, NC needs a reset. And at least one county employee needs to discover the unemployment line...the animal shelter manager. Stupid people should not be employed by the county. Unfortunately, though, stupid people are often elected to office.
Ahead of the storm, Wayne County made its shelter available to the community to bring their pets. Hedges said some people had trouble getting in contact with the shelter to make arrangements while others didnt want to take their animals there.
And this, children, is why socialized healthcare is bad - like with public schools if you do something better than the government you will be punished for it.
She did not have a license for doing a good deed in an emergency. What was she thinking?
Wayne Countys animal services manager Frank Sauls , A Richard Cranium of the Highest Order
And any said judge agreeing to a warrant can be recalled.
LOL, I see what you did there.
Well done...
That would be a good start.
Yeah plus how the media went all boo hoo over pets being left at home possibly to drown and these nice folks took them in for the duration. So now what? Those gov’t people will put them down if not picked up in sufficient time?
what charges??
