PINE RIDGE, SC S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster announced a mandatory evacuation of the South Carolina coast on Monday. All eight the counties along the coast would begin evacuating as of noon on Tuesday, McMaster said at a press briefing on Monday. McMaster said he would reverse lanes on four main roads to facilitate the evacuation. As of noon Tuesday, lanes will reverse on Interstate 26 from Charleston to Columbia and Highway 50from Myrtle Beach. Highways 278 and 21 in Beaufort County will be ready for reversal as of noon, but officials will wait to make an order at that time. State offices and schools will also close in the affected counties on Tuesday, McMaster said. We know the evacuation order Im issuing will be inconvenient, McMaster said. But were not going to gamble with the lives of the people of South Carolina. Florence would ore wind than Hugo and more water than Matthew, McMaster warned. Projections on Monday show the storm making landfall in the area of Wilmington, N.C., early Friday morning, but with much of South Carolina still under threat of seeing a significant impact. State lawmakers were saying the governor would order an evacuation beginning Tuesday. State offices and schools would also be closed in the affected counties, lawmakers said. S.C. Rep. Alan Clemmons, R-Horry, tweeted Monday afternoon that McMaster had announced to members of the Geveral Assembly he will order evacuations for the coast beginning at noon on Tuesday. S.C. Rep. Tim McGinnis posted to his Facebook page that lanes on major state roads would be reversed to facilitate the evacuations. As of 11 a.m. Monday, Florence had strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. On Saturday, McMaster formally declared a state of emergency, allowing officials to put hurricane preparations into effect and begin coordinating resources. The S.C. National Guard can also be deployed during an emergency as necessary. The state has submitted a request to President Donald Trump for a federal disaster declaration, clearing the way for federal funds and assistance for any damage from the storm.
Thanks! I sent the link to the kid.
Hogan got rid of the rain tax
I think N.C.( and perhaps VA) may be the states in most trouble. But, def N.C.
I mentioned VA because of the counter clockwise motion of the storm would bring effects to the north more than the south.
I am reading on some forums that McMaster is casing chaos...when there is a mandatory evacuation order it causes all kinds of mayhem and headaches
again I, and many others, don’t understand why this order when issued for the ENTIRE coast .... the track is trending north and SC will be on the left or weaker side anyway
Last I saw the polls are close for the Election....I hope this doesn’t coast him votes and the Democrat wins
Wow. Some sanity there since I escaped several years ago. Will wonders never cease?
Or you get lucky and the eyewall hits NC instead of SC. I think evacuating the SC waterfront is premature, except the tourist cities. I would not be evacuating Charleston and using up hotels that could house people from NC.
Yeah, sounds like he is ignorant about storm wind direction.
Hogan isnt perfect, but, hes a breath of fresh air.
Risk management decision.
If he issues the order and no disaster hits half the coast, he looks like he overreacted, but reasonably, on the side of caution.
If he fails to issue the order and a disaster does happen, he looks a million times worse.
Given that we don’t know right now, and things could go either way, it is probably the right choice.
They are evacuating Chincoteague, Va. too. they are trying to give time to those on the coast to get out of dodge. Although I honestly feel that S.C. will not get it as bad as they said just yesterday. This storm seems to be heading further north away from S.C. Even MD has a SOE in place now.
As in what happened with Harvey.
It was really strange....the Gov (Abbott) came to Houston (before) and warned folks to evacuate, immediately.
The Mayor and County Judge said there was no need to evacuate....that evacuating could/would be more dangerous.
After Harvey's devastation and loss of life, the County Judge and Mayor looked 'a million times worse'. They should've erred on the side of caution.
I live in the Baltimore suburbs and was surprised that Hogan actually won four years ago. I have to admit I did not vote in that election. Usually, I always turn out for presidential primaries and general elections, although I do recognize that all elections have consequences. It’s just so hard to get excited about local Maryland campaigns in recent years.
Moreover, I wish Hogan wasn’t such a NeverTrumper. He has never uttered a kind word about our great POTUS, to my knowledge and does take pride in speaking out against anything President Trump supports. Hogan refused to provide Maryland National Guard forces to patrol the border and even defended Federal workers when President Trump cancelled their pay increase.
Praying for fellow Freepers in the path of Florence and hoping my area is spared any significant problems. My county has received more than a month’s worth of rain in just the last ten days, resulting in trees toppling due to their roots being weakened by the saturated ground. Any strong winds will certainly lead to power outages as well.
He could have just left it a voluntary evacuation down in southern sections ...people are free to leave anytime they wish,,..
also the next time a more direct threat approaches, less people will take it seriously and stay
I would guess that the vast majority of people are going to make their own decisions and that the order is more relevant for its legal implications than anything.
The son lives in Ladson - outside Charleston....he updates Facebook with info on what is going on and we supplement with calls...many breathing a bit easier now that the projected track is putting them away from the center and on the “good” side.
It’s a biggun!
It’s push a little farther north. But there;’s a block to the north (as well as to the west). The latest model shows it stalling over the outer banks. MD should be fine and SC should be ok to. NC and southern Virginia get tons of rain and the outer banks get all the wind and waves.
