2020 Republican convention goes to Charlotte, the lonely and reluctant bidder in age of Trump

As Americans fought in recent weeks over whether restaurants should refuse to serve top aides to President Trump, an entire city has been debating what it means to host his convention for reelection.

Charlotte won the rights to the 2020 Republican National Convention on Friday. But that's largely because it faced little serious competition. And even before the victory was announced in Austin, Texas, this thriving, progressive urban island in the Trump-friendly South was suffering some buyer's remorse.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, a Democrat, says the decision to host the convention was the hardest she has tackled — "not just as a mayor but as a mom and as a friend" to her community.

To quell anger from her constituents, she has vowed that she will not deliver a welcome speech, an extraordinary break from custom. Other local leaders are going further, promising to use the occasion to speak out against Trump.

"If it were Mitt Romney or damn near anybody besides Donald Trump," the debate would have been "much less heated," said Larken Egleston, a Democratic council member.

Not Las Vegas. Reno would have been better

“Pick another city.”

There are 1000’s of hotel rooms in Tamuning (tourist area) of Guam. They’d have a good time here.

Makes no sense to have RNC convention in a city that hates your party; there will be riots, roadblocks, probably the police will listen to the mayor to step down, don’t protect the RNC folks, etc.

I don’t care if the bid was cheaper, why not choose a red state city?

This is going to be a nightmare.

A Democrat being petty...as expected.

In today’s political climate the Democrat mayor has more to fear from people in her own party. If she had said anything good about Republicans or about President Trump she would have faced a firestorm from the “tolerant” left.

I would have hoped to see it in a small city like one of the following:

1. Grand Rapids, Michigan
2. Green Bay, Wisconsin
3. Youngstown, Ohio
4. Huntington, West Virginia
5. Erie, Pennsylvania
6. Dubuque, Iowa
7. Fort Wayne, Indiana
8. Louisville, Kentucky

These places seem like some serious hard-core Trump country.

[That’s an excellent point. Las Vegas in the summer always has plenty of rooms available, and plenty of first class venues to hold a convention. And Las Vegas has a professionalism and mastery of the hospitality industry that puts Charlotte to shame in every respect.]

Presidential year conventions are a lot like the Olympics. The parties expect the cities to foot a lot of the costs. Charlotte is picking up the tab for security and a host of other ancillary costs in exchange for international exposure. Hosting it in Vegas would be a strictly cash-and-carry exercise with the RNC covering the cost of security and paying the city to close off the roads, etc. So you go from an Olympics-style event where the convention is subsidized by the city to a corporate event when you pay the city for everything.

Well, AC, you’d better strike Erie, PA from the list of “serious hard core Trump country.” It ain’t.

“Not only did they host the democrat convention, but the Democrats didn’t pay the 10 million it cost to put on convention. Duke Energy put up the money. I guess in the long run the citizens of NC paid for it. What a bunch of deadbeats.”

The CEO of Duke at the time, Jim Rogers, wanted to be appointed Secretary of Energy. He loaned the DNC $10 million of company money to assist with the up front cost of putting on the convention. Allegedly the money would be repaid once the DNC received the revenue from the events. When Obama put his cabinet together, he chose someone else for the job. The $10 million company loan to the DNC, which was never repaid and was forgiven by Duke, is an example of the type of influence peddling that has corrupted our government.

The DNC stiffed Duke (or there was always a behind the scenes agreement Duke would “forgive” the loan). Whatever the real circumstances underlying the payment of the money, the loan was not repaid.

Under strong criticism from the public, the CEO claimed the “stockholders”, not the customers of Duke, covered the cost of the bad loan. A nice fiction to quell the outrage of customers angry about continual rate increases. The truth is, Duke generates its revenue from those who buy electricity and the profits Duke generates for the stockholders are only possible if it is generating money by selling electricity. Given that Duke did not decrease its dividend payments to the stockholders there is no other conclusion than the funds to cover the payment to the DNC were extracted from the consumers of electricity in North Carolina.

Shame on the Duke CEO (who should have been fired), shame on the DNC, shame on the board of directors of Duke, shame on the state utilities commission for approving rate increases after the “loan”, shame on the SEC for not investigating the company’s lack of fiduciary responsibility to the stockholders, and shame on the DOJ for not investigating and prosecuting an outright theft from the treasury of Duke.

This deal was pure crony capitalism. It is another example of the 1% feathering their nests and using funds that don’t belong to them to further their own goals. Meanwhile, the average citizen pays for the loan in higher electric rates. The oligarchs who pretend to be capitalists in this country are destroying capitalism through their corruption and greed.

One can assume Duke there will be no $10 million loan or payment to the RNC when the Republican National Convention comes to Charlotte.

Certainly the area around it is ... Trump held multiple rallies up there in 2016, if I recall correctly.

I can't speak for the city, but it looks like he won Erie County by 2 points in 2016.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, a Democrat, says the decision to host the convention was the hardest she has tackled — "not just as a mayor but as a mom and as a friend" to her community.

If the convention is a huge financial boost to the community, one of her tax-paying constituents should punch her in the mouth, then start a recall drive.

I hope her ambitions don’t include running for Governor or Senator.

“So will Charlotte Democrat Mayor Vi Lyles refuse millions in tax dollars that will come in due to the convention?”

The millions wont be near enough to repair the city after the democrats finish burning everything down. There are a lot of historical irreplacable buildings, I really dont want to see democrats destroy them

Where I live in the Southern part of the city, its nice. However there definitely are areas in the northern part of the city that are pretty rough. Also, the place has way to damn many Yankees. Fortunately, North Carolina is still a Southern State - which Trump won.

Once we solidify our hold on Congress in November, it will be nonstop “Make America Great Again” for the next two years.

By the time the convention comes to town, the Democratic Party will be in a shambles, partly because of DJT’s success and partly due to their political civil war

Trump’s approval rating will be through the roof and Madame Mayor will have to shut her big, fat yap -—or get thrown out of office by the voters who are enjoying unprecedented peace and prosperity.
