How 16 ships create as much pollution as all the cars in the world
DailyMail ^ | 21 November 2009

Posted on 05/23/2018 11:45:07 AM PDT by rey

Last week it was revealed that 54 oil tankers are anchored off the coast of Britain, refusing to unload their fuel until prices have risen. But that is not the only scandal in the shipping world. Today award-winning science writer Fred Pearce – environmental consultant to New Scientist and author of Confessions Of An Eco Sinner – reveals that the super-ships that keep the West in everything from Christmas gifts to computers pump out killer chemicals linked to thousands of deaths because of the filthy fuel they use. We've all noticed it. The filthy black smoke kicked out by funnels on cross-Channel ferries, cruise liners, container ships, oil tankers and even tugboats. It looks foul, and leaves a brown haze across ports and shipping lanes. But what hasn’t been clear until now is that it is also a major killer, probably causing thousands of deaths in Britain alone. As ships get bigger, the pollution is getting worse. The most staggering statistic of all is that just 16 of the world’s largest ships can produce as much lung-clogging sulphur pollution as all the world’s cars. Because of their colossal engines, each as heavy as a small ship, these super-vessels use as much fuel as small power stations. But, unlike power stations or cars, they can burn the cheapest, filthiest, high-sulphur fuel: the thick residues left behind in refineries after the lighter liquids have been taken. The stuff nobody on land is allowed to use. Thanks to decisions taken in London by the body that polices world shipping, this pollution could kill as many as a million more people in the coming decade – even though a simple change in the rules could stop it.

Why are tariffs a bad thing? Better than the income tax. What’s the aversion to tariff in the USA? THE REST OFF THE WORLD USES/HAS THEM.

You know, if everyone would agree to be poor and/or die, all these problems would go away.

The enviros hate nuclear energy just as much as coal, oil and natural gas.

They want us to use wind and solar, exclusively.....................

Why are tariffs a bad thing?

Agreed - tariffs are used all over. Trade agreements between two or more countries are nothing but pre-agreed tariff and quota levels on a huge range of products. If we wanted true free trade we would have no trade agreements at all. There definitely is no such thing as a "free trade agreement."

The only issue with tactically applied tariffs is that the trade environment can change unpredictably for producers, importers and exporters which can perturb their businesses, employees and markets.

There you go.

I don’t know if we should mention this to Leftists or not.

They’re such a brittle bunch.

In a few hours, those volcanoes will probably emit more emissions than humans do in a couple of centuries.

The cost of nuclear maintenance would be far too much for any shipping company.

The reason there are few accidents is because the standards for nuclear plant safety are far above any other machines on earth. To weld a single pipe requires certified welders with security clearance, certified materials and multiple tests/inspections by licensed engineers.

It would also be a target for state sponsored terrorists/pirates so security would need to be at a military level.

Until nuclear is made inherently safe and impossible to be used by terrorists, it will never be profitable in private ships. One bad accident can irradiate an entire continent.

Big ships at sea burn DFM or #1 Diesel. Its ran thru centrifugal purifiers and service filters before its put into the engines because just one of the pistons of one of the engines in a vessel like this costs more than your family made last decade. If it was purchased out of the US it is probly hi in sulfur, but the fuel used to move the worlds ships around the ocean is pristeenly clean.

Wait.

Aren’t these the same crop of Malthusian views who spent the entire decade of the 1970’s howling about overpopulation and clamoring for ZPG?

The new 2020 ultra low sulfur rules will be enforced in two years. While burning bunker fuel seems like burning asphalt, almost all Western companies now burn a cleaner fuel to keep from fouling their engines.

And replacing a Wärtsilä engine does not make ship owners happy.

So is this article already out of date? Sure seems so.

If we manufactured more and China less our factories create less pollution than China’s. And no shipping pollution.

Environmentalists should be supporting the tariffs.

Usual leftist eco-propagandists ...

I simply say to THEM and anyone following their writings :

IF YOU HAVENT GIVEN UP YOUR CAR, YOUR AIR CONDITIONING, YOUR WINTER HEATING, YOUR HOLIDAYS IN DISTANT LANDS — *YOU* ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM AND A HYPOCRITE.

(it is usually at that point they start shrieking insults and run away VERY fast).

Requiring shipping companies to use cleaner fuels such as diesel or LNG, all of a sudden the costs to ship goods from China to the US helps level the playing field without tariffs. Win - win.

Let the Enviro’s help us for a change!

Good luck enforcing that in international waters. Ships could be "dual-fuel" capable, though - just switch tanks to the cleaner stuff as you approach coastal areas.
