Exclusive: Ancient Mass Child Sacrifice May Be World's Largest
National Geographic ^ | 4/26/18 | Kristin Romey

Evidence for the largest single incident of mass child sacrifice in the Americas— and likely in world history—has been discovered on Peru's northern coast, archaeologists tell National Geographic.

More than 140 children and 200 young llamas appear to have been ritually sacrificed in an event that took place some 550 years ago on a wind-swept bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in the shadow of what was then the sprawling capital of the Chimú Empire.

Scientific investigations by the international, interdisciplinary team, led by Gabriel Prieto of the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo and John Verano of Tulane University, are ongoing. The work is supported by grants from the National Geographic Society.

While incidents of human sacrifice among the Aztec, Maya, and Inca have been recorded in colonial-era Spanish chronicles and documented in modern scientific excavations, the discovery of a large-scale child sacrifice event in the little-known pre-Columbian Chimú civilization is unprecedented in the Americas—if not in the entire world.

thanks for the ping, I follow your thinking, I don’t believe for a moment these people killed children and young animals for pleasure or entertainment, they had to have had, in their way of thinking, very good reasons. Assuming they were being punished by their own concept of a supreme being, a ‘gift’ of what was most precious might have seemed to them a way to persuade their gods to behave kindly to them.
Starvation and destruction due to some catastrophic event would perhaps explain the sacrifices.

That many babies are slaughtered by planned parenthood in any given week.

Not quite!

140 is a pittance compared to 3,300*5.

PP claims a bit more than half of THAT number.

I'd like to thank the United States Government for protecting me and my kind.

You see, 40 years ago, my odds of making it out of the egg, alive, were very poor; about 80% of us died.

But a lady discovered our plight and wrote a book that addressed our problem,
and, in 1972, a law was ammended protecting us even further. (http://www.fws.gov/midwest/eagle/protect/laws.html)

What I find strange is that the same government passed a law the very next year that allowed for killing
of unborn, and apparently unwanted, humans.  Little ones still nestled safely in their Mother's womb.
Around 25% of them are dying before birth - on average nearly 3,300 - every day of the year.

I hear that by now, somewhere around  60 MILLION of them have perished.
Wouldn't that kind of mess up the humans plans for growth, and welfare, and
retirement?

Strange birds; these Homo Sapiens.  Perhaps they'll come to their senses
before they are ALL dead!

Meh, I bet the commies in venezuela kill a lot more than that through communism’s ritualistic and predictable starvation diet.

‘a ‘gift’ of what was most precious might have seemed to them a way to persuade their gods to behave kindly to them.’

did you ever wonder about the mentality of dieties that require blood sacrifice in order to procure sufficient worship from their creations...? for that matter, why would any omnipotent divinity, capable of total knowledge and limitless power, find it necessary to be worshiped in the first place...?

I thought Christopher Columbus was the most evil man in The New World...

Is it reasonable to guess that none of those children were from the local tribe that murdered them?

As for the 200 llamas, new winter coats and wool socks for all the spectators after the ceremony?

The victims of natural disasters have to blame something or someone...I imagine. Something or ‘someone’ with supernatural powers.
It wouldn’t be enough to sacrifice a bunch of old people or old animals; to persuade the ‘gods’ to be merciful, only the most precious and flawless, the most beautiful would prove their sincerity. The gods of wind, water, mountains and forests are picky.
Natural disasters and catastrophe’s leave long memories.

’ The astronomers and the geologists whose concern is all this .. should judge of the causes
which could effect the derangement of the day and could cover the earth with tenebrosity,’
wrote a clergyman who spent many years in Mexico and in the libraries of the Old World which
store ancient manuscripts of the Mayas and works of early Indian and Spanish authors about them.

Mother's Day is in May, Father's Day is in June, but every day is Children's Day. Thanks jalisco555. Good topic for the weekly digest ping, which is shorter by one member, as we had someone drop out this week, first time in a long while.

Before: “Too many mouths to feed!”
After: “The gods are pleased! We have more food now”

Just don’t understand what made some of these folks tick...why did they think this was a good idea....
