Editorial: Unleash efforts to regulate pit bulls

Last week a woman in Roxbury lost control of her dog, a pit bull mix.

It was in the midst of mauling a woman when police shot it. Also last week in Hyannis, a 22-year-old man was attacked and wounded by a pit bull named Zeus.

In January, in Falmouth, a 1-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries when the family pit bull attacked her, biting her in the face. The child’s father had to resort to stabbing the animal with a knife to end the attack. After being treated locally she was flown to a Boston hospital for further care.

ROTFLMAO!!! Love his expression. My Dane’s a lot different looking. He’s a black and white mantled Dane with uncropped ears who looks much like a giant black and white Beagle.

Best of all, both are still in excellent health, better than I can say for myself.

One of my brothers was an elite athlete. He used to run marathons. In the army, the drill Sargent requested he slow down, because he was afraid the others would have a heart attack or a stroke keeping up with him.

So one day, he’s about 30 years old, doing his weekend bike ride. Down in Houston Texas.

Two dogs launch after him, one a pitt bull. He tells me they would get close, and he would kick them in the face, then he would peddle fast, then slow down and repeat. He said the one dog fell off after a few miles, but the Pit was determined. He said it went for miles. He said he started to get scared. But after a few more miles, the pit gave up. Scared the hell out of him. The Pit wanted him bad.

Like ‘gun control,’ these advocates need to be specific about what they want banned. Using the term ‘Pit Bull’ is like saying ‘assault weapon.’ ‘Pit Bull’ isn’t a specific breed, and there are many hybrids. Rather than editorials with horrible stories, the author (and others) need to educate themselves with problems and workable solutions.

A gun has to be picked up and used by someone. It’s not going to run outside and randomly start shooting. A pit bull acts on its own and is unpredictable.

Pitbulls are very good dogs when qualified people train them for the work or socialization that suits their temperament. Which means the dog may not be a good choice as a family dog especially around young children or other pets. It may be a great ranch dog running cattle. They may be suitable for a home with older teens.

I would not support a ban but I would support certain measures.
1. Require tagging with a micro chip.
2. Yard that is securely fenced with locks on the gates.
3. Leashes have to be of substantial material same with collars.
4. Warning signs posted on property.
5. Extra licensing fee which will be reduced with proof of training certificate.

Rose, my red Heeler of 18 years was something like a goddess of dogs. I could never ask for a better companion on four or two legs. That being said, children outside our family had to be kept away from petting her. Easily annoyed by children.

I’ve been bitten by a dog twice in my life - German Shepard both times. I love my pit bull and she loves me.

Statistics prove guns are too dangerous.
Statistics prove alcohol is too dangerous.
Statistics prove white people are too dangerous.
Statistics prove black people are too dangerous.
Statistics prove Freedom is too dangerous.
Statistics prove liberals masquerading as conservatives are too dangerous.

The solution is not a law or ban. You will make criminals out of law abiding pet owners.

Oh, you wouldn’t be an offender. It sounds like anyone who has those breeds can keep them until the dog passes on. And then after that, there are certain restrictions.

I think there is too much evidence, though, that the bully breed can bite (even a family member) without being provoked. I never thought about it much until I was bitten [by one].

But we have always stuck with Labs, and we have a Border Collie Lab mix, too, that seems almost human. They, like your dogs, though are getting older, and it makes us a little sad, but heck so are we.

Enjoy your pups! God is good.

First your dog,then your guns.
Have at it”conservatives”.
...
I can walk my Sig First your dog, then your guns.
Have at it P229 and with 100% certainty not shoot anyone.

I cannot say that with a pitbull on a leash.

Idiotic comparison.

Even a liberal could see the difference.

One of the reasons I’m getting my ccw is so that I can simply shoot any pit bull that attacks me or my lab puppy as happened at a dog part about 6 months ago. In the future, I will simply pull out my gun and empty the magazine in to any attacking pit bull.

I have not come down on the pit bull owners in the forums.

I want realistic solutions, not emotional hyperbole.

Considering your earlier statement, would you please put forth some suggestions for consideration for this deadly and escalating problem?

All right already we get it.
I think we should have more autonomy locally.
Let’s create towns with NO dogs and NO cats. Or other pets.
Real estate values in those towns and counties will flourish.
I’d buy a house immediately if I didn’t have to deal with an effen barking, much less, mauling dog or pissing cat.

I just don’t want to live with pet owners in general, whom I think are on a lower IQ scale, in general.

If people really need security, get one of those new fang wireless security devices.

Pit bulls and any barking dogs should not be my problem. Yet, it is and may be.

You never hear about these tragedies occurring in the elite neighborhoods, do you?

It is not a “natural retention” of “aggressive dog fighting nature” at all. The traits being discussed over and over again here are being and have been bred deliberately into these dogs for hundreds of years. By dogfighters. For money.

It's not really either/or but both. The dogs that were initially bred for aggressiveness were the breeds that already had a high level of natural aggressiveness. If you want an aggressive dog breed, why start at ground zero? All the breeds commonly called pit bulls came from predecessor breeds that were already ferocious. I doubt you will find much cocker spaniel in their lineage.

Bull dog breeds are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States today. Getting rid of them is next to impossible. The solution starts with educating the ignorant, not attacking the law abiding for their choice of pet.
The statistics show that the same as with guns this is a mostly inner-city problem.
I have no single solution for vicious dog attacks or inner city gun violence. All I know is that my guns haven’t shot anyone. My dogs are well trained and haven’t bit anyone or hurt any other animals.

The Canadian province of Ontario has banned the breed since 2006. They didn’t go and seize the pit bulls or dogs similar in looks to them but outlawed breeding or importing them and neutering those dogs that existed at the time. The numbers have been dwindling over the years and attacks by pit bulls at least have dropped as well.
