Editorial: Unleash efforts to regulate pit bulls

Last week a woman in Roxbury lost control of her dog, a pit bull mix.

It was in the midst of mauling a woman when police shot it. Also last week in Hyannis, a 22-year-old man was attacked and wounded by a pit bull named Zeus.

In January, in Falmouth, a 1-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries when the family pit bull attacked her, biting her in the face. The child’s father had to resort to stabbing the animal with a knife to end the attack. After being treated locally she was flown to a Boston hospital for further care.

The statistics prove that the breed is just too dangerous. According to dogsbite.org, “39 U.S. dog bite-related fatalities occurred in 2017 ... pit bulls contributed to 74 percent (29) of these deaths. Pit bulls make up about 6.5 percent of the total U.S. dog population. During the 13-year period of 2005 to 2017, canines killed 433 Americans. Two dog breeds, pit bulls (284) and rottweilers (45), contributed to 76 percent (329) of these deaths.”

We are not a society that seizes pets left and right, but we should certainly restrict access to pit bulls and endeavor to breed them out of existence.

There is a huge gray pit bull that roams my neighborhood off leash no one knows who it belongs to. I’ve asked the mailman and the police and animal control have been called multiple times.im afraid to let my two little dogs out in the front yard. My neighborhood has a list serve group that posts alerts when the dog is out. Dog owners like this are a menace.

You'll get rid of Hillary supporters and SJW’s before you will get rid of pit bull lovers...They are both ignorant of the brutal facts.. unless we can convince the pit bull lovers to become friends with Hillary supporters and their kids... then its a twofer

I just returned from a small city in Colombia. On Sundays they close off the main street from cars. People walk their dogs...kids..bikes. They passed an ordinance requiring pit bulls be muzzled. That didn’t work so now they will outlaw the breed.

Alright, if you are serious, here’s some ammunition. Don’t go off half-cocked.

Yakima reaffirms pit bull ban––& suburb reinstates one

Attack again forestalled Yakima city repeal attempt

YAKIMA, Washington––The Yakima County town of Tieton, population 1,200, on April 9, 2018 celebrated Dog Bite Prevention Week by reinstating a pit bull ban, at request of police chief Jeff Ketchum, after a five-year experiment with allowing pit bulls, subject to strict conditions.

Got bit by a pit bull a few months ago; very painful and the owner hurried away without leaving me information, so I got stuck with the bill too.

This neighborhood has several breeds banned: https://www.newsmax.com/thewire/kentucky-neighborhood-ban-dog/2018/04/09/id/853501/

It might just be considered that the people who buy and raise the pit bulls might be the problem? Nature vs. Nurture kinda thing?

It might just be considered that the people who buy and raise the pit bulls might be the problem?

While there are responsible pit bull owners, there are many who are not. Exactly how do you propose to keep pit bulls from the ones that not responsible? The problem with pit bulls is that there are way too many examples of apparently responsible owners whose dog suddenly snaps.

Nature vs. Nurture kinda thing?

Probably both are factors but there seems to enough on the nature side to suggest that pit bulls as a breed retain too much of the aggressive dog fighting nature to be good animals to have in a community. Lions and tigers can be domesticated to some degree but no one complains that there are strict regulation about owning one of the large cats because of the inherent danger. They remain domesticated until they decide not to be, often with fatal consequences. Wild dogs like wolves and coyotes do not domesticate well (with few people disputing that), so why is it so hard to recognize that some aggressive dog breeds might not domesticate well either?
