Something needs to change,' says Milwaukee native who turned in rifle to authorities
A Milwaukee native said enough is enough and turned his semi-automatic rifle into the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
Ben Dickmann grew up in Milwaukee, but moved to south Florida years ago. He shared a Facebook post of a sheriff's deputy taking possession of his AR-FiveSeven, which is similar to the AR-15 that was used in the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Dickmann said only law enforcement should have guns that powerful.
"Something needs to change, and it needs to change now," Dickmann said. "People have been doing nothing but talking about it for the last 10-15 years."
As of Friday night, the post had more than 200,000 reactions, and 90,000 shares. He’s been getting a lot of feedback.
"I would say 90 percent has been very positive," Dickmann said. "Ten percent has been very, very negative. Almost threatening."
But one message sticks out to him and reaffirmed his decision.
"I even got a message from one of the parents at Stoneman Douglas privately on Facebook, thanking me for what I did. And that, that right there, meant the world to me," Dickmann said.
Instead of selling the gun, he turned it over to the Sheriff's Office so it can safely dispose of the rifle.
Isn’t it wonderful that we live in a country where it is everyone’s right to give up their arms voluntarily?

About 30 years ago, I had to dispose of the gun involved in the fatal accidental shooting of my cousin. I started in the garage with a sledge and pounded just about everything flat and then put the barrel in a vice and bent it into a U. I then threw the metal parts into a couple of sloughs and the splintered wood stock pieces into several thickets. All the king's horses and all the king's men won't put that gun back together again.
Nothing says “I’m an Idiot” like turning in your Firearm in to the Authorities.

Assault rifles are fully automatic.
They are very tightly regulated and very expensive, no one is committing crimes with assault rifles.
AR-15’s are not assault rifles.
All semi-auto rifles require a trigger pull per round fired.
There are other guns that shoot larger projectiles just as fast.
He sounds as if he is afraid of what he might do. OK...next time there’s a maniac on the lose with a legally or illegally obtained gun threatening you or others go shelter in place. Its probably better that this guy doesnt do anything except wait for the bullets to fly by.
