Democrat Patty Schachtner won a special election for a state Senate seat in Wisconsin on Tuesday, scoring a huge upset victory for her party in a district that President Donald Trump handily captured just over a year ago.
It was the latest in a string of election victories for Democrats since Trump took office, and a sign of hope for the party that the energy from the base and frustration with the president could lead to more wins in November.
With every precinct counted, The Washington Post reported that Schachtner, the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, won by 9 percentage points.

Post 60 refers to the Virginia House.
The collapse of the DEM party, predicted by so many here on FR after 11/8/2016, has been greatly exaggerated.
The way I see it, if it takes a bloodbath to purge the GOP, so be it.
If anything, I actually think the bloodbath increases Trump’s re-election chances, because now it’s a clear choice, Trump or the Rats, the RINOs will have been rendered irrelevant.
Reagan did just fine despite the GOP getting routed in the 1982 midterms.
We'll see what happens over the next couple of months. The trend may not be the GOP's friend - debatable - but the Democrats have 2-3 Swords of Damocles hanging over their heads that could very well come swinging down soon.
scotus
the Republican Party has not earned respect by supporting trumps efforts to make America great again. They either oppose, obstruct, or give luke warm support.
It's true that the Congressional Republicans will bear the chief blame if they get wiped out in November. I've never seen a party be less supportive of its President, or of the People who elected that President.
They are the biggest bunch of cowards and sellouts I've ever seen in my life, and if they'll have no one else to blame if they lose power.
The only thing they have going for them is the People's knowledge that the kooky Democrats would be in control, and not very many Americans should want that.
The president has stated his intention to campaign for House and Senate candidates across the country this Fall.
This should help.
“...people will soon see the tax cuts in their paycheck.”

People will see those tax cuts in their paychecks starting next month.
The economy will continue to grow all year. Hopefully that will help.
But Republicans have to haul their a$$es to the polls.
A 17% GOP turnout in Wisconsin for this state senate seat is pathetic. So is 650,000 Trump voters staying home and not voting for Moore in Alabama.
As I mentioned in a previous post, the president intends to campaign for House and Senate candidates across the country. This should help.
You are referring to Virginia?
There's no reason to think they won't, once November rolls around.
As long as the President is active, and the economy keeps growing, the GOP should be OK in November—despite themselves.
There's no basis for presuming November will be a bloodbath—not based on a couple of races.
It's simply too far into the future, and I can't believe that so many around are yet again falling for the gaslighting from the Propaganda Media.
Taking the entire "special election" cycle as a whole, the GOP is doing fine. The Roy Moore situation was a special case, and the donations are strong in general.
If the Republicans get out the vote, they'll perform adequately, and there's no excuse for 2016 GOP voters not to get out and vote in November 2018...
...”and there’s no excuse for 2016 GOP voters not to get out and vote in November 2018...” Unless, of course, they have died, since 2016. Dead voters vote Democrat, only!
And we have some more US House specials coming up, in PA, OH, and AZ, we can’t expect to be able to do just drive to the hoop for a layup.
Did Scott Walker do anything in this State Sen special?
>Reagan did just fine despite the GOP getting routed in the 1982 midterms.
Reagan entire domestic agenda was gutted by the 82 midterms.
Can’t sugar coat these losses, we need to get our vote out!
How about Hillary and John Podesta and Obama not being in jail yet with the elections going on, loss Alabama, loss Virginia, loss here, meanwhile nothing gets straightened out yet, supposedly over fear public ant handle the truth. They can vote on misinformation but can’t handle truth?
Never Trumpers sit around wanting to be proved right, though already wrong.
I think we need to take this seriously. Democrats’ rage is real, and anger is a great motivator. They are as mad as we were about Hussein in 2010. There’s a reason the minority party usually wins in midterms following a new president getting sworn in.
We can’t fool ourselves by pointing to modest wins in huge GOP districts in special elections or defective candidates as the cause for loss. We need to make sure our voters get out and vote in November and protect our president.
Actually we won 4/5. Two in SC, One in in IA, and one in KS. We lost the one in WI.
