It's true, I can't believe I've held this incredible pain inside me for so long but I have to tell somebody how cruelly and unfairly I was treated, Oh so long ago.
I was new to the Army, heading to Basic Training in 1969, wanting to make a difference and serve my country and America but what I encountered shook me to my very core.
Me, a wide-eyed recruit, got off the bus at Fort Lewis Washington and was immediately yelled at and verbally abused by this looming, big, (and mean), Staff Sergeant named SSG Gritman.
He singled me out immediately because he hated me and made me fall into a position I would come to know and hate, the FRONT LEANING REST Position, (*SOB*), to do push-ups I didn't deserve to do because I was nice person!!
This monster of a man continued to demean and harass me throughout the entire 8 weeks of training, always singling me out as if I were his pet DOG, never relenting, never cutting me slack, never saying he was sorry!
Well, here it is, the reason I confessed my pain and suffering from so long ago; I want to find former Drill Sergeant Gritman, and have Congress indict him on charges of having been mean to me those many years ago.
“I’m very seriously considering suing the doctor who slapped me at birth......”
Me too. But I was so ugly at birth the doctor slapped my mother.
Actually that is a very sad tale. Lol!
Oh, the Huge Manatee!
Yuk, Yuk - we were neighbors. I was A-2-1 Fort Ord June ‘66
Those cattle car trailers still exist at some of the BTC forts.
Later in life, I had a “cathartic healing event”.
While building a new BCT complex, I got to tear down the Ypres Gas Mask training building where I took CS Gas exposure training 40 years earlier. It was a weird feeling when I took possession of the site as it was old Missouri post oak timber, park-like setting, old picnic tables and looked just like it had all those years ago.
When I got to boot camp I was totally prepared -———
Eight years in grade school with the Sisters of Notre Dame followed by four years in a Jesuit High School AKA a Jesuit
Penal Colony. Drill Sgt’s were pussies compared to Father
Donovan and Sister Martina! Oh for the goode olde daze!
I was beaten by two drunk off duty police officers back in ‘96 for sitting on the wrong public bench.
Their wives were cheering while they did it.
This is NOT Satire....
Well, I had to save that tune!
Well Howdy neighbor. I arrived in May, so just a few weeks before you.
From Ft. Ord to Ft. Gordon, Georgia, to SeaTac headed for Viet Nam. Last minute orders for seven of us changed to Korea. Spent all my time in Korea, extended, came back on early release.
I’m glad somebody enjoyed it. I love Big Band music, and have that recording on a Benny Goodman album. Johnny Mercer wrote some great tunes. That’s just one of them.
In the eighth grade I had volleyball in PE. If I hit the ball with a closed hand Mr. Hungerford hit my behind with a paddle. I have never been the same again in the intervening 58 years.
I love big band too! Play lots of them on the weekend Tunes Canteens! Along with random tunes from many genres. :)
Mine was a black fellow about the size of Sammy Davis Jr, even had a pencil mustache. Nice guy, but everybody jumped when he said jump.
The day after President Roosevelt died in 1945 our teacher Miss Wilson was very much in mourning. On the playground I happened to say to another kid that “everyone has to die sometime”. He ratted on me. Miss Wilson ( an old Maid, or un-maid) took me into the cloak room, made me drop trou, took off her shoe and paddled my butt. None of the class saw it.
I’m finding inconsistencies in your statement. You’ve got 24 hours to admit you liked it, and have been collecting paddles ever since.
Isn’t that line more appropriate for Bill Clinton?
Oh my God that’s funny. I’ve got tears in my eyes. So you basically got paddled for saying something you probably heard your parents, or some other adult say.
Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!
