Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures...

Charges filed on Friday night...typical Dem move.
Charges sealed on Friday night...typical Dem move.
Arrests Monday.
Timing on this is veeerrry interesting...
That Manafort will (likely) be the target of the indictment isn't a surprise. The timing is suspicious, of course.
Speculation is rampant from him being investigated to resigning because he is a witness in an obstruction case.
At least we haven’t heard he just wanted to spend time with his family
CNN says whoever got indicted will find out Sunday through their lawyer..and also implied very strongly CNN knows who it is....but won’t release the names yet
How CNN knows all this is beyond me
You're thinking about civil litigation. Discovery in federal criminal cases is extremely limited.
“Anyone remember the name of the DC lawyer here who tells what the gossip is in the halls of the power brokers.”

Nothing yet, there.
This whole thing is shaping up to be the biggest scandal in my lifetime...and I lived thru Watergate.
Me too. Have you noticed that every time we turn around the democrats have caused another scandal these days and usually around the Clintons.
We must put an end to the Clinton crime family once and for all.
Meanwhile, it seems like the entire Democrat Party is looking more deranged by the day.
Read into that whatever you want!
Ping.
CNN is the favored media organ of the swamp. If it is true, it was likely given to them, not ferreted out by independent investigative reporting.
Of course CNN knows..the guess as to WHO it is depends on how CNN Commies look, like they are going to explode with happiness or they look constipated
BTW: It’s going to be Manafort to detract from Uranium One. Mueller had this in his pocket ready to go for awhile now. Uranium One got too “hot” in the media for them so this is their distraction.
Anyone want to bet I’m wrong? This was all about changing the news cycle and trying to turn the tables back on President Trump.
They are definitely going to try to change the news cycle—just in time for the Sunday morning propaganda shows to feed the cycle till Manafort is charged next week.
Good. Thought they would try anything.
Terrorism doesn't work if the citizens aren't afraid of the terrorists.
Its a poster here. I cant remember his alias. He frequently posts after he has gone to a party at his current or former firm
I’ve speculated here that Manafort may be shielded from prosecution on many charges simply because the process of securing a FISA warrant and conducting such questionable surveillance against him might compromise any criminal case.
How does a Federal prosecutor prevent a witness in his case from speaking freely to anyone that witness damn well pleases?
Easy.
Mr. Judge/Congressman, “Their testimony many jeopardize my criminal investigation”.
Therefore, it would not be appropriate for them to disclose any information before my case is completed”.
Hey, what if it's Foam Boi?
This gives manafort time to flee.
