Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures...

I personally hope this is wrong but makes the most sense, but have watched Trump out maneuver them before.
That would be a huge blunder for the Clintons. The focal point would be the meeting with the Russian lawyer who incidentally worked for Fusion GPS. The discovery phase would blow this whole thing wide open.
Anyone want to bet I'm wrong? This was all about changing the news cycle and trying to turn the tables back on President Trump.
I think you are exactly right.
James Rosen at FNC...
Attorney for @PaulManafort tells me neither he nor his colleagues have received any word of their client being indicted. cc @realDonaldTrump
Manafort also had no idea that his home would be raided. It appears !Mueller likes surprises
Back when the Awan dude was first arrested, someone here on FreeRepublic posted an admittedly unverified rumor that a sealed indictment against a sitting member of Congress had already been handed up by a Federal grand jury.
If it is Manafort and I were his lawyer I demand immediate handover of all evidence. If the evidence traces back to the wiretaps I demand the presentations to FISC to see if the FBI presented the dossier as their probable cause. If so then move to preclude any evidence that emanates from the dossier.
I realized that after I posted my message. Apologies. Go Astros!!!! 5-1
Yes... that can be said about a number of potential indictees...
Yes...this is the 3rd or so strategic leak to legitimize the special counsel and to keep Trump from firing his ass. Its painfully obvious
These people are sleaze balls.
But they know the rules.
This will soon move into a Political/MSM arena which is where they think they can win.
Fire Mueller et al?
Appoint a new slightly more “Special Counsel”?
All political.
And spin will be retribution by Trump and the vast right wing.
Manafort. The Deep State rolling the dice, but the president is the one that holds all the ace cards.
How does a Federal prosecutor prevent a witness in his case from speaking freely to anyone that witness damn well pleases?
Grand jury proceedings are supposed to be shielded in secrecy by the prosecutor and the jurors, but doesn't the First Amendment protect a witness who wants to run around selling a story to the news media?
Interesting. Would love to see Awans along with DWS.
Boente also with Comey several times wth Comey talked to Trump on the phone....

With the resignation of Dana Boente on Friday as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, President Donald Trump has an opportunity to replace another Obama-era holdover in the Department of Justice line of succession. If Trump demands that the department fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and if enough officials resign or get fired rather than carry out his order, the decision to do so could fall to Boentes successor.
I predict Podesta for perjury. I believe I heard Judge Jeanine state that Podesta previously testified to congress
that he didn’t know who paid Fusion GPS for the dossier.
Know we know the Clinton campaign(he was the manager) paid for it.
I think its General Flynn too. No good reason other than he is a WITCH!
Maybe Samantha Power should be listed among the top possibilities for one of the indicted persons.
