This is not a story you'd expect to read in 2017, but it happened: President Trump went to North Dakota on Wednesday and praised its Democratic senator, who is up for reelection next year, as a “good woman."
"Come on up, senator," Trump told a crowd at an oil refinery in Mandan, as he had a called up some of the state's elected officials, all of them Republican, save Sen. Heidi Heitkamp. "These are great people. They work hard. They’re for you 100 percent."

My vote is this, she becomes Republican. Trump says Republican and serves eitght years, unless he signs amnesty.
I’ve thought - and have said so here a few times - that Trump will pivot and run as a democrat in 2020.

People who don’t look at the nuances miss this completely. Trump lives in a messy world filled with real people who are complex not party labels. If he can work with this Senator he will build a bridge. He’s building as many bridges as he can on both sides of the aisle jockeying into position to get legislature passed for the American people. It’s a process not an on off button.
The labels, (Democrat, Republican), are a poor reflection of ideology at this point anyway. Who could think of Paul Ryan as a Republican in the strict definition?
In Trump’s world it comes down to individual people not labels just like in mine.

Everything is strategic with Trump. I don’t second guess him much. He usually puts things right in the big picture.
I think Trump is finally being Trump.
For two years he told us he was a man of action. He told us he is a deal maker.
This is what he is doing. I think he did the calculation of what they would end up with after 20 days of getting beat up by the opposition. It likely came out to be about the same deal that he got. And he got Harvey relief as well.
Think about what’s coming in the next few months: Two huge hurricanes, North Korea, and a challenging economy. Look for stories about the collapse of the petro dollar—and that could lead to the dumping of the dollar very quickly.
This is not the time for twiddling his thumbs. This is a precarious time. It is a time to lead—and he is finally doing it.
