While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.
Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.
FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

I thought of that too.
Sheriff Judd lives and breaths the Constitution and doesn’t violate anyone’s rights. He also has very well trained officers that are kind and considerate that will shoot you in the face if you need kill’n. I work with A.R.E.S. as a shelter operator in his county and he has armed officers in each one. If you need shelter and you are wanted or a sexual offender, his officers will give you shelter somewhere else. Shelters aren’t sanctuaries.
FEMA law was enacted after katrina...ALL HOTELS, MOTELS MUST ACCEPT PETS IF THERE IS HURRICANE AND YOU ARE EVACUATING.
I am having hard time posting that info..maybe someone can post the actual notice.
Are you implying that public shelters should just let anybody in? Whether or not they have arrest warrants pending or are illegal aliens? That sounds rather cruel, allowing criminals to mingle with law-abiding citizens.
Nobody is crying wolf.
This is a powerful hurricane that is going to do a lot of damage where ever it lands.
The problem is trying to figure out just where in a system that changes by the hour.
Weather is a dynamic system, not a static one. It’s like trying to shoot as a moving target.
Excerpts:

projects approved by the Director, to the States and local authorities for
animal emergency preparedness purposes, including the procurement,
construction, leasing, or renovating of emergency shelter facilities and

approving standards for State and local emergency preparedness operational plans
pursuant to subsection (b)(3), the Director shall ensure that such plans take into
account the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals prior to,
during, and following a major disaster or emergency.
[snip]Sec. 536.
The Department of Homeland Security shall, in approving standards for State and
local emergency preparedness operational plans under section 613(b)(3) of the Robert
T. Stafford Disaster and Emergency Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 5196b(b)(3)), account
for the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals before, during,
and following a major disaster or emergency: Provided, That Federal agencies may
provide assistance as described in section 403(a) of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster
and Emergency Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 5170b(a)) to carry out plans described in
the previous proviso.
Nice graphic—thank you for posting. Gives a lot of perspectives.
You’re right. Most of our damage is in the form of downed trees and power lines. I’m at work and in business as of 6:00 AM this morning.
I can’t give you the hydrodynamics and hydrophysics. Suffice to say that a storm consistently moving at the moderate pace of Irma will continually draw warm water (as opposed to a stalled storm) as long as it is available, and a large storm draws its energy from a wider area.
I'm thinking the police statement was more intended to keep criminals away from the shelters ("Don't go there, police will be there, you WILL be arrested").
As a matter of routine, they will be logging the identities of ALL people who enter the shelter, more to be able to respond to queries from frantic relatives/friends if the people's residences are destroyed by the storm.
Fabulous news! I take it this means the crashing glass sound was not your car windshield yesterday.
They OUGHT to know who is in their shelters.
For a lot of reasons.
Wow, thanks. So that was actually 50+ miles, the eye from San Juan. Phew. (But it was still scary).
“Man, that is just nasty. PR dodged a cannon round”.
You bet we did. I’ve never prayed so much in my life. Both in pleading for mercy before and in thanks afterward!
I think the statement must have been because the shelters must have a bad reputation as being crime-ridden.
But it would seem as if they should want all criminals and sex offenders to show up and then be identified: a) so they have a place to go, b) so the criminals can be identified and taken for holding at the police headquarters or county jail, and c) so that any registered sex offenders can be separated in other shelter facilities.
Instead, it sounds like a warning for criminals on the lam to stay on the lam.
There are also people who might be reluctant to use shelters because they’re concerned about being preyed upon. I think the sheriff just relieved some of that concern and now more folks will be inclined to use the shelters.
Wish we could clone this guy.
Emphasis--below is a historic track from Tuesday, Sept. 6. Note the increased distance between Thurs 8AM and Fri 8AM forecast points, compared to tighter Tues-Wed track points:
Prayers up, dear Guennie.
We just went through same, with Harvey.
Our biggest fear was rising water vs powerful winds.
Please keep us posted on your whereabouts.
