There is something more than a little jarring in the ongoing humiliation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
In an ill-timed, ill-focused interview with the NYT, President Trump revisited his disdain for Sessions, his first, most-ardent and most-loyal supporter in the Senate.
When supporting Trump was still considered career suicide, Sessions donned the red cap anyway. Maybe it will prove fatal for Sessions career, after all.
The president has not made a secret of the fact that he blames Sessions for the scandal that now engulfs the Trump administration, claiming in contravention of all available evidence that somehow if Sessions had not recused himself from the investigation into Trumps 2016 campaign that his White House will not be under siege.
How do you take a job and then recuse yourself? Trump asked reporters rhetorically. If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, Thanks, Jeff, but Im not going to take you. Its extremely unfair and thats a mild word to the president.
Sessions seems an odd target for Trumps blame, given how other members of his inner circle including his son, his son-in-law, his former campaign chairman and his former national security advisor have all laid the president open to the scrutiny of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Yes! I listened to Stirewalt today spouting “CONCERN” about the 22 million on medicaid. How many of those 22 million vote republican? These linguine spined compassionate conservatives (social conservatives+fiscal liberals) make me sick. While the democRats bring guns to a fight, these country club republicans bring chopsticks.
Sessions accepted the post knowing he was going to “Recuse” himself from the most important issue facing the President, and he failed to inform him of that. That is beyond dishonourable, it is devious. Fire Him.
Sessions humiliated himself.
He immediately caved on recusal at his confirmation hearings
What he SHOULD do is to notify the Senate that his recusal was in error, he is not conflicted and will no longer recuse himself from Russia matters.
Then he should start leaning on Mueller to get on with it, indict Comey, and go after the real Russia scandals with democrats.
By recusing himself he immediately in the mind of democrats validated a “scandal”. He had no balls or backbone - like most Senators.
If he can’t fix his screw up, he should resign. What good is he to Trump if he won’t or can’t do his job.
Trump is 100% correct. Sessions is a big disappointment and so obviously not up to the job. He is not the man he was thought to be. The Senate if full of “get along with everyone” eunuchs.
Why is Sessions content to keep his job? He should have submitted his resignation as soon Trump stated his lack of confidence in him.
“This is just Trump releasing the daily cage of rabbits...”
Great word picture - thanks for the chuckle!
Session is a eunuch. He neutered himself with the recusal. Throw him under the bus. No one will rescue him at this point.
I liked Sessions too. But he has wasted his time on potheads and chasing down doctors for coding violations. He seems to want make headlines by going after the petty criminals. I think he even likes civil asset forfeiture. The real criminals inhabit the swamp in DC and Sessions doesn’t have the testosterone to go there.
We don’t have time for wimps at this point. Trump has the standing to talk down sessions. Trump has not been a wimp.
I don't know, but I trust that the President does, and that's enough for me.
Sessions is a good guy and Trump knows it....and knows that Sessions supports Trump in every was....and Sessions has just said so.
Hang on.
What has he done? Reconstituted civil asset forfeiture. With appropriate safeguards, of course, /S.
Fatal for his career? How much longer does he want to go on? Is he going to be another of those 90 year old guys they drag out of "public service"?
“As for the Never-Trumper Stirewalt, he can go to hell.”
As I was reading this steaming pile, I thought the same thing.
Some Never-Trumper at Fox News. Now there’s a source I (don’t) trust.
According to an astute political observer on this forum, it is a trick from wrestling...distraction for the media so they take eyes off the real ball in this case.
That said, Sessions got cold feet simply based on some routine conversations with foreigners (and Russians) which all senators engage every week.
I agree with both of you and wrote the same thing before my earlier posting.
Of course he can. Anyone who is down on Sessions should ask themselves why he hasn’t!
I’m not making a judgment one way or the other. When Trump said that Comey better hope there were no tapes of the meetings, I knew what Trump was doing and it was pretty smart. I don’t know what he’s doing now but will wait and see.
thanks for the post. full disclosure, the reason i supported Trump in the firstplace was because Jeff came out strongly for him.
Jeff has never quit on anything or anybody as far as i know in a long and storied political career, but i’m confident that he would tender his resignation immediately should the President directly ask him for it. that would be another and the latest mistake the President would have made in this his first year, imo.
he’s still the most trustworthy active politician in the gop (imo) and has always been an honest public servant as far as i can tell from afar. i’m still confident (given what he’s already accomplishing on the ground) that he’s doing the best he can (under extremely trying circumstances) for us and the President, while protecting the indpendence of the AG’s office.
God continue to bless and guide you and your work for us, AG Sessions.
In my work, one “oh-shit” erases a whole lot of “atta-boys”.
The President tells it like it is. That’s why we voted for him.
I agree.
