Ralph Peters: 'Messy, Bloody' Military Action Probably Required in North Korea
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters said that dealing with North Korea's expanding nuclear missile program will probably require "messy, bloody" military action by the United States.
Peters called the idea a "grand delusion" that China would choose the good will of the U.S. over what it sees as a very valuable alliance with North Korea.
"We will never see Beijing remove that regime or even bully it to the point where it threatens to destabilize the regime. Period," the retired officer said.
North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) missile deep into Japanese waters Tuesday, sparking international alarm.
Peters said the U.S. must look at what the Chinese government actually does rather than what it says or commits to doing. China has never come down hard on North Korea, he added.
Peters emphasized that the United States cannot allow North Korea to own an ICBM with a nuclear warhead.
President Trump tweeted this morning that he no longer expects China to help keep North Korea in check.

Based on China's responses so far, it is unacceptable to China.
We should at least waive the provision in the WWII treaty that prohibits them from having the bomb. I dont know if they would make one but it would certainly be a wake up call to China that this effort to reduce US influence in the region could backfire.
“So you dont have a problem with this psychopath having a fleet of ICBMs and hydrogen bombs?”
Geez, Louise, I didn’t say anything remotely resembling that.
Yes. We should have explored that avenue long ago. And upped the ante along the way until they took it. It’s too late now. The only alternative now is war.
Do you really think anything short of war will stop him? I don’t. 25 years of diplomacy and sanctions have failed. If you rule out the military then that’s where this ends.
Nip it in the bud before they take out Berkeley, Madison, San Francisco, New York, Chicago ....oh wait...
Ralph Peters is the most never-Trumper of all the never-Trumpers.
I change the channel whenever I hear his high, feminine, screeching voice on my TV.
He was soooo wrong during and through the presidential campaign that I can never listen to him again.
He’s trying to redeem himself now, and Fox is aiding and abetting.
Be very careful trusting anything he says!
“Do you really think anything short of war will stop him?”
Maybe not. But seriously turning the screws on China economically has not really been tried yet, and it’s a better alternative than all out war.
All options on the table. Responses proportional to the offense. War should not be ruled out, but there is much that can be done before resorting to that option.
I agree. I can’t imagine China wanting to risk trade deals with the US in favor of playing nice with a nuclear armed psychopath at their front door.
"The United States made some of the worst Trade Deals in world history. Why should we continue these deals with countries that do not help us?"
I said last night, that President Trump's best way forward, is a trade embargo against China. Looks like he's already there.
This man claims he is an historian.
I’m also a historian, but not with so many degrees.
A real historian can predict the future based on knowledge of the past.
I predicted Trump’s win. Peters said that Trump would lose in a landslide, and even said he would vote for Hillary.
And now we’re listening to what Peters says? Why?
Worst analysis ever. Dead wrong.

Trump Doesnt Bluff Observers, Writ Large, Continue To Find Emphasis on the Wrong Syllable
1) economic retaliation
2) Taiwan card
3) Threat of China's nuclear-armed neighbors.
1) should have started early, but now gearing up
2) made some initial attempts but not pursued in earnest
3) only a theoretical possibility(obliquely mentioned early this year)
To make it work, at least two of the three items should be upfront and forceful. We are behind schedule and time is not on our side.
The best we may expect from China is 1) cut off economic lifeline to N. Korea for a short time or 2) to sit out during military attack on N. Korea. Unless China is convinced that it will pay a terrible price by refusing to act in earnest, which it has not done for decades.
Not to change the subject, but this is an important comment, and not just about NK.
For example I hope Trump is thinking, "so much for working with Paul Ryan - but we had to give it a try."
Conventionally we could hardly dent them. They are dug in and ready. You have to see the in depth fortifications in the North to believe them. Anyone who thinks we could destroy them easily conventionally is, well, wrong.
Ralph Peters needs to be shown the door.
After what he said about Trump during the campaign, and after he voted for Hillary, we’re really going to take the man seriously again now?
Please don’t post more Ralph Peters bulllsh!t anymore on FR.
Please note I didn’t post the article.
