They came for John Cunningham on a sunny evening last week, showing up at his house in Brighton like early dinner guests.

They were federal immigration agents, and they were there to throw John Cunningham out of the country he has called home for 18 years.

John Cunningham, 38, has an electrical contracting business. He has paid taxes. He has done much to improve the lives of those around him.

"Maybe he was a licensed electrician before coming to the United States,"

He's 38, came here at least 18 years ago. That would have made him about 19 or 20. Is that old enough to be a licensed electrician there and here? Don't know how many years you have to be apprenticed before you can be certified. I'm just a dumb old broad.

I don’t know, either. I don’t know the requirements for electrician licensing in the U.S. or in Ireland. I do know that an electrician can’t fix the switch on your dryer, because he’s not allowed to work on appliances. I learned this when an electrician at church said to let him know if I needed anything ... and what I needed was a new switch on my dryer.

“18 years ago, and he still lives the same!”
“Oh lord, why do we have to suffer this way?”
“He was a mighty patient man,
Refusin’ to be native all he can,
And still a fur’ner, from 18 years ago!”

I got NO ‘trucks’ to give!

The law is the law. He did not apply for an immigrant visa, he got a tourist visa and overstayed that visa becoming an illegal alien.
Once a person is an illegal alien there is no way to become legal without leaving and applying to be an immigrant like they should have in the first place.
The system is not broken, the laws are being broken with no enforcement.
That seems to be changing.

Didn’t know that about electricians and dryers. I live in an apartment building, and won’t use the machines in the basement as they aren’t reliable. It takes forever to dry anything as they have two stacked dryers connected through the same vent. It’s easier to just lug the bags down to my car, and get it all done in one visit to the laundromat. Saves me from having to run up and down the stairs too.

Wanna bet he’s been home many times since he first arrived?

Union rules, I think. Electricians are one group, and appliance-repairmen are another, and the guy who comes to clean the lint out of the ducting is another. The ducting guy is in the same group with chimney-cleaners.

I love the laundromat. When a large batch of my family members comes home from camp, I either take all their stuff to the laundromat or send them (if it’s my kids ;-). Beats running ten loads at home.

Being a good person means nothing. Round ’em up.

Yep, because our laws are not based on a subjective appraisal of someone's "goodness". That's why we say justice is blind.

And BTW, I wonder if the guy who paid $1000 for services never rendered thinks he is a good guy.

I was thrown out of Dubai on the next plane back to Muscat Oman. My papers were not in order. That is just the way it works. Their country and their laws.
