Cowen says McDonald's will upgrade 2,500 restaurants to its "Experience of the Future" technology by year-end, which includes digital ordering kiosks.
The firm raises its rating on McDonald's to outperform from market perform and price target for the shares to $180 from $142.
Same store sales estimate for 2018 raised to 3 percent from 2 percent.
McDonald's shares hit an all-time high on Tuesday as Wall Street expects sales to increase from new digital ordering kiosks that will replace cashiers in 2,500 restaurants.
Cowen raised its rating on McDonald's shares to outperform from market perform because of the technology upgrades, which are slated for the fast-food chain's restaurants this year.
McDonald's shares rallied 26 percent this year through Monday compared to the S&P 500's 10 percent return.
Andrew Charles from Cowen cited plans for the restaurant chain to roll out mobile ordering across 14,000 U.S. locations by the end of 2017. The technology upgrades, part of what McDonald's calls "Experience of the Future," includes digital ordering kiosks that will be offered in 2,500 restaurants by the end of the year and table delivery.
"MCD is cultivating a digital platform through mobile ordering and Experience of the Future (EOTF), an in-store technological overhaul most conspicuous through kiosk ordering and table delivery," Charles wrote in a note to clients Tuesday. "Our analysis suggests efforts should bear fruit in 2018 with a combined 130 bps [basis points] contribution to U.S. comps [comparable sales]."
He raised his 2018 U.S. same store sales growth estimate for the fast-food chain to 3 percent from 2 percent.
The analyst raised his price target for McDonald's to $180 from $142, representing 17.5 percent upside from Monday's close. He also raised his 2018 earnings-per-share forecast to $6.87 from $6.71 versus the Wall Street consensus of $6.83.

CNN’s headline about this will read: McDonald’s laying off workers at 2500 restaurants nationwide.
I concur. Some customers are total assholes. See the same thing at the local Costco. Especially when the kid is really trying. Some people can be real condescending pricks.
“I can’t help but wonder how soon until the rest of the fast food restaurants follow this trend.”
Not just fast food, most jobs will follow this trend.
Yeah...I should’ve reported it, but I was young at the time and pissed, but felt better after I pasted him with the burger...:^)
They have nearly 40,000 stores. Which classifies this as a pilot project.
I would have felt like saying “This is f$%*& McDonalds you are at. You think you dining at a 4 star restaurant here. Relax.”
Yes I think people are badly underestimating how strong a push there will be for basic income.
Newly repackaged socialism
I work very hard not to have a ‘tude unless I’m getting one first.
Then, I’m a pro at it (I used to work for one of the formerly Big 6).
It was like dealing with The Mob almost every day.
So are we to assume you throw food at people?
Do you also fling poo?
Or maybe you're just exaggerating and trying to seem like some kind of bad-ass?
The BOTTOM LINE for those of you on the Left (i.e., the Soros bunch that is paid to monitor us) is that if you Leftists DEMAND that places like McDonald’s pay $15/hour, then the jobs remaining will be worth $15/hour, and the jobs worth less will become ‘kiosks’.
By the way, these kiosks are great overseas, where you can usually order in English...regardless of whether the workers there speak a word of it.
Yes, folks need jobs...Young folks, working their way through school or summer jobs...
But most of the fast food places I’ve been in the last little while are full of “foreigners” who barely speak English...
They are anywhere from 20 to 50 years old...
It's global, and we're already seeing trouble. It takes a relatively small percentage of people to do the real work. The problem is what to do to occupy people with no responsibilities and lots of idle time. The drug epidemic, unruly behavior, violence/terrorism and a lack of achievement are all at least in part due to young people being enabled to lead unproductive lives with no responsibilities to others.
These scenarios never end well in movies about the future.
.
Problem is that McD doesn’t sell food.
.
Don’t do that now, brother. SWAT will come in and kill you.
Of course, if you were muslim and had a bomb, they’d still be trying to find a motive ..........
McDonald’s is effectively dead all ready, in the medium and long term time frames.
Phone applications like Yelp and TripAdvisor allow consumers to see reviews of locally owned restaurants which do not have the overhead of a franchise and find the good ones.
Maybe it is a Canadian thing, but service has gone downhill, due to changes in policy. Use to be they would apologize for screwing up and order and would refund part of the order or give you a free burger. Not anymore. I went the next day and said they forgot something on my order the day before and they asked why I didnt return right away yeah, right, I get home and am going to drive back 5 miles because you missed a burger in my order I dont think so. Now they dont even apologize or refund or anything.
Think whatever you wish, humblebummer....
I always special order. I’ve come to expect it is messed up 1/3 of the time.
I, of course, have never made an error. LOL
I figure, where humans are involved, errors happen.
With computers, they happen much, much, much faster. Especially if you told it the wrong thing...
