Paul Bedard at the Washington Examiner had the eagle eye in his take on Sunday’s Washington Post. The headline at the top of the front page was “Trump polls at record lows” and the subheadline (all caps) was “LEAST POPULAR PRESIDENT IN MODERN TIMES.”
That’s a little inaccurate, leaves out “at the 100 days mark.” But the Post dramatically submerged a comparison of just how unpopular Trump was: He still beats Hillary Clinton in a 2017 matchup. That didn't emerge until the second-to-last paragraph of a long story that traveled to page A-14.
The headline on that page was "Among modern presidents, Trump's popularity is lowest." According to the Post's own poll, Obama dipped to 38 percent several times. Dan Balz and Scott Clement admitted:
The new survey finds 46 percent saying they voted for Clinton and 43 percent for Trump, similar to her two-point national vote margin. Asked how they would vote if the election were held today, 43 say they would support Trump and 40 percent say Clinton.
Obviously, the media coverage of these presidents should be considered as a reason for poll ratings, good or bad. But reporters aren't going to acknowledge that. They want it to sound like Trump's unpopular, and their unremitting hostility had nothing to do with it. In the middle of the story, Balz and Clement underlined the negatives:
The 100-day marker is in part an artificial measuring post for any president, but by comparison, Trump has reached this point in his presidency faring worse to much worse than other recent presidents. An electorate that was deeply divided throughout the 2016 campaign remains so today, with opposition seemingly hardened and unyielding on most questions regarding his presidency.
The president’s approval rating stands at 42 percent, the lowest recorded at this stage of a presidency dating to Dwight Eisenhower. Trump’s 53 percent disapproval rating is 14 percentage points higher than Bill Clinton’s 39 percent disapproval in April 1993, the worst before Trump. Eight years ago, then-president Barack Obama’s approval was 69 percent, his disapproval 26 percent.
The Post-ABC poll finds 43 percent of Americans said they strongly disapprove of Trump’s performance. That’s also the worst by far of any president since George H.W. Bush by more than double. In the spring of 1993, 21 percent said they strongly disapproved of Clinton’s performance.
They also included graphics of the polling, that showed how divided the approval was: 94 percent of Trump voters approve of his performance, and 92 percent of Clinton voters disapprove. The number of "other" and "non-voters" was 29 percent positive, 62 percent negative.
Bigly Yuge Truff...
Where they so full of themselves that they didn’t bother to poll Hillary’s 4 million illegal aliens voters?
Trump has got to clean up Washington first. His longer term goal is to also clean up the dishonest press. But right now, the dishonest press will have to be a useful punching bag.
My wife is watching Japanese NHK tonight where they are running a special show on the rise of Trump and what's happening. I don't understand Japanese, but it appears the state-owned NHK is making an effort to show a balanced picture of Trump.
If you project that out a couple years, and the fraud of the Clintons and the Obamas gets gradually exposed to the world as Sessions goes to work, then I could see some international minds changing and being more accepting of Trump.
In Asia, I think Trump already has earned respect as a leader. The leaders won't acknowledge it publicly, but look at all the smiling when President Xi was at Mar-a-Lago. You'll recall the last time Obama visited Shanghai, the Chinese didn't even bother to wheel over a stairway for Air Force One.
But Trump must also deliver results to the economy and foreign affairs -- though he certainly seems well on his way there.
By the way, there is no way there were 4 million illegal voters...not a chance.
I'm surprised the Washington Post even mentioned that little tidbit.
What about the new poll that shows 98% of Pres. trump’s voters would vote for him again? It appears that the constant pounding of Trump by the Democrat media has failed BIGLY!
You think there were more or less?
If the “professional” consensus is 800 thousand, what is your guess?
Wish she would just die now.
Mitt Romney can run in her place as a Democrat in the next presidential election.
Yes, I expect if the election were reheld now President Trump would win the same states plus New Hampshire, Maine, Minnesota, and Nevada. Colorado and Virginia would be close but we are not there yet.
Those damn russkies are at it again, now they’ve hacked this Washington Post poll. Investigators, please investigate! We need to get to the bottom of this!
The 2016 election should have convinced anyone with a brain that polls are total crap.
“Ugly Truth” ???
Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.
Yet more evidence of the extreme propaganda that passes itself off as a newspaper.
Trump is the first President to run against the Democrats, the Republicans, and the press all at the same time, and still he won.
Who the hell cares. This is useless info. Is this all we got? Beat them Mr president. You can do it. I have faith you can do it.
