A wounded Paul Ryan is facing another potential crisis over the next month.
The Speaker, who saw his years-long effort to repeal ObamaCare collapse last week after a rebellion on the right, must come up with a plan to fund the federal government and avert a shutdown.
The Wisconsin Republican will face many of the same tricky intraparty dynamics as he tries to keep the government running.
Funding expires in about a month, on April 28, but the House is taking a two-week recess in mid-April, leaving negotiators just a few legislative work weeks to reach a deal.
The stakes are extremely high for the GOP. A government shutdown, similar to the one orchestrated by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and his House allies in 2013, would confirm what many Democrats and political pundits are already saying: Republicans, despite controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress, simply can't govern.
Two of the biggest hurdles to keeping the government's lights on are conservatives' insistence that the spending package include billions for President Trump's border wall and that it block all federal dollars for Planned Parenthood.
Trump has requested $1.5 billion in supplemental funding for what he's called his "big, beautiful wall," plus another $2.6 billion in his 2018 budget request.
But Senate Democrats have threatened to filibuster the must-pass spending bill if it includes money for a wall, sparking a shutdown standoff over one of the president's chief campaign promises. On top of that, some Republicans from border states -- including Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (Texas), Armed Services Chairman John McCain (Ariz.) and Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) -- are highly skeptical of Trump's wall, citing concerns about the price tag and private-property rights.

Only an idiot of the calibre of Ryan would have to face battles, when his party controls the House, the Senate and the Presidency.
He is a special kind of loser.
I guess that’s the operative excuse by big media and GOPe: “It’s the Freedom Caucus’ fault!!”
Well, RINO the Ryan-hearted is not going to escape blame that easily.
Throw the bastard out. Then tar and feather him.
Followed by stoning.
Then concrete shoes.
Then the east river.
He deserves no less.
Well, duh, many Democrats and political pundits would just have a point then, wouldn't they?
So long as Paul Ryno and McTurtle are in charge, put where they are by Republicans.
Would someone please explain to me why in the world the Republican House, which passed multiple repeal bills under Obama’s presidency, can’t pass one of those again? And what good does electing a Republican majority do when, with the House, Senate, Congress and soon Supreme Court, we cannot accomplish conservative objectives? I’m getting angry, and there will be consequences at the next election. If Republicans squander what they have been given this year, they will never recover.
False; the Republican are under assault from every side: liberals, progressives, libertarians, black lives matters, social justice warriors, losing candidates, and other Republicans who worship old idols.
Ryan is lying : he's not a conservative but a socialist as his socialist communist Ryan care bill showed.Ryan put on his “Republican” Jersey to fool us, to get his foot in the door while he stabs America in the back
Plus he takes donations from Soros and his wife is a big democrat activist
Impeach Ryan
Ryan is a Democrat in an R jersey.
He was trying to preserve as much of Obamacare as possible because of the power Fedzilla derives from it.
The Uniparty eunuchs serve Fedzilla, not the citizens.
It's lack of experience that got him...and the "hurry up" lurking in the back of his mind.
He’s been in DC working with the dems for so long you would think he could pull a few of their votes.
Ryan is a smug pr!ck in the mold of Eric Cantor.
Ryan knows he’s financially set, permanently plugged in to the DC power structure. If Ryan were to somehow be Cantored, he’d move to lobbying and make more money than most of us could ever dream of, while collecting a generous retirement.
Yeah, I’m bitter about garbage like this.
Easy problem to solve, say goodbye to Ryan and elect a real Speaker and a real house majority whip.
Ryan is an e-GOP doofus. He is destroying the party instead of seeking genuine unification and consensus.
In fact Ryan reminds me of John Kerry. Unself-made men who married into money.Doofus losers. Hen pecked wanna bees.
Ryan ruined Trump and now Trump has become part of the swamp rather than its drainer.
Ruining a president is not much of a feather to have in one’s cap unless one is a vengeful elitist like the Bush family is. I’d go as far as saying that Ryan is an agent of the Bush family. In ruining Trump Ryan has taken away America’s hope, witness the stick market.. Now things are about to get ugly and violent across the nation.Ryan/Bush family’s fault.
Tar and feather the lot of them.
Btw, I get a kick out of Seinfeld stars being hacked off that Bannon makes money off of them.
Good or bad, Ryan is the team’s quarterback. NOBODY ELSE WANTS THE DAMN JOB!!!!
Change the rules or force a filibuster that drags and drags - who freakin' cares but the media and the dems.
I guess Trump will have to say what he wants, otherwise they get a veto. If we have a shutdown let the media scream 'Pubs can't govern" - which actually means if they cave they can't govern. Trump will make sure only the dem government employees sit at home.
Let's face it, unless we get brazen, confrontational and put-'em-down mad... nothing will change.
The old we-can't-do-this-because-of-this is a lie.
Slow down, Phil. We are 66 days into Trump’s Presidency.
