Hollywood studios could be in for another year of big-budget bombs and increased volatility around mid-budget releases, film industry analyst Doug Creutz warned in a report this week.
As he has been warning for years, the Cowen and Co. media analyst said that film studios increasing reliance on tentpoles and superhero movies will contribute to a decline in per-picture box office grosses in 2017, making what once seemed like sure-fire bets on big-budget flicks a decidedly risky enterprise.
According to Deadline, Creutz says the film industry in 2017 will be at least as difficult as it was in 2016, when operating profits at the major studios fell 14.6 percent, even as total box office receipts inched up 2.2 percent over 2015 numbers.
That increase was due largely to inflation and the increasing cost of movie tickets, the analyst warned. And Disney with its stable of established franchise properties like Star Wars and Marvel films reportedly captured the lions share of the haul with a staggering 60.5 percent of the industrys $4.18 billion in total operating profits.
Creutz noted that nearly three-dozen upcoming releases from major studios this year boast budgets north of $100 million, and predicted Fox and Paramount could struggle the most with offerings like War for the Planet of the Apes and Transformers: The Last Knight, respectively. He added that Disney would likely continue its dominance with a new Star Wars film and the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, while Warner Bros. could see success with Wonder Woman, Justice League and Christopher Nolans World War II epic Dunkirk.
The Cowen and Co. analyst has expressed skepticism for years about the major studios shift toward pursuing similar release strategies, or what he described as putting more and more eggs in the franchise picture basket.

There was not one good Obie in 2017. Marky Mark’s movie was ok. The Boston Bombing movie
Last H’wood movie I’ve watched in the last few years was “Sully”.
This is a cycle we’ve all seen before. The public gets tired of big, bloated, special effects-laden “blockbusters” and some comedy made on the cheap will come along and break box office records and then for the next couple of years, cheap comedies will rule the roost.
It opens on the 17th but ticket pre-sales are already breaking records.
Beauty... has already beat out Finding Dory to become the fastest-selling family film in history, according to Fandango, the online ticket retailer.
The Marvel sequels will all be cross-connected so you have to see all of them to keep up with the story line. We’ll see how that works out. They plan on making dozens. I’ve seen one or two and they are ok but I have no desire to see 25 Marvel movies. Now the Transformer series is stupid beyond belief, overlong and boring. How it’s gotten this far I’ll never know. But then I prefer movies like “World’s End” over these extravagandas.
I might like to see Dunkirk. That is if Hollyweird doesn’t screw up the story. And that is a big IF.
Hollywood will probably do a “new” movie about Spiderman vs a Giant ape named “Kong”. Or a recycle of something else already done many times. How about something new and uplifting, like a movie named “Mr. Trump goes to Washington”; full name “Mr. Trump goes to Washington destroying Swamp Monsters”.
>>Im interested to see how the Beauty and the Beast box office does.<<
nationally. But the Eurotrash will love it.
I am surprised they don’t just do fellatio in the streets and restaurants.
Give em six months...
It'll be tough but I am sure they can work a gay/racial angle into this one.
If they made movies to entertain rather than pushing their agenda, they might not have a problem. And, if they’d STFU.....
May they all bomb and drive Follywood into a deeper TDS!
They will blame Trump for their failures.
They are working up to a Godzilla vs. King Kong movie (not joking). I saw a funny comment based on that BvS trash:
King Kong: “Save . . . Mothra.”
Godzilla: “Why did you say that name? WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?”
Lulz.
And . . . another damn Star Wars movie is coming out this year? Really?
Well the worm turned and Trump was elected and now Fly Over country is handing Hollywood it's ASS on a platter with their crummy offerings. They will be showing Big Losses on a great many of their projects. Karma is a Bitch Ain't It?????
No wonder the Follyweirds are in a manic panic state over President Trump!
The last I saw was American Sniper. Can't remember what I saw before that. I don't miss it at all.
More CGI comic book crap that appeals to men with the emotional maturity of age 12.
The millenials will destroy a lot of America with their weird and different life styles like hating real heroes and worshiping comic book fake heros.
Also, not wanting to drive, own a car, or own a home and content to live at their parent’s homes with their moms and dads until their parents die.
With luck, Mother Nature will make sure that they don’t breed and produce even worse human waste.
Too bad. Without Hollywood, I would never have known that every famous man in world history spoke like a British faggot.
YES!!!! My wife gets BOGO's from Redbox (which is blue now... ?????), and we look and look and look for something, anything worth watching and.... nothing. we haven't got anything in months. We've ended up (re)watching The Middle, Breaking Bad, even Seinfeld....
The Fagic of Disney should abruptly end after this years’ releases. Right now, more Russkie spy ‘gunplay’ films are being frantically playwritten with 2X sped-up schedule than combined in history. And white supremacist v. FBI, etc., you may never see a muzzie as the villain again.
I wish Gibson would move to Kansas or something and put together a conservative - or even just normal - film center.
