The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.
LOL. Had me thinking there was a civil engineering term I’d never heard. As a Hoosier I look with envy on the great State of California despite its warts. Cannot think of a state more well-endowed with natural beauty, and I *know* not all her citizens are fruits and nuts. In fact those are fewer and further between than seems apparent from the news.
I was afraid the water rushing over that “emergency spillway” would cut right through it. Prayers up.

The base of the dam is earth/rock embankment.
If the spillway fails, the dam likely fails.
It retains sufficient water to inundate the densely populated portion of the Sacramento Valley.

Yes, pray for the safety of the workers at the spillways and then all those living in possible flood areas.

N. California will probably get hit with another pineapple express with frog drowning rain starting Wed for 3-4 days this week.
Apparently, those who pay big money for weather predictions, non government. Are not planning any new heavy duty construction with heavy equipment until the end of March or early April. Because their predictions are showing storm after storm to hit.

I haven’t been following this in detail, but have seen the photos. Yesterday(?) they thought that they could use the main spillway (with the concrete failing and built on rock). It sounds like they got more rain snowmelt than they thought so had to dump more water to keep the dam from over-topping.
So I THINK that the flooding will be due to a “controlled” release of the water using the two spillways to avoid a major failure in the dam. And that this “controlled” release will cause the flooding.
You and I know that, but you know the media and sheeple who will buy it.
It’s about time. Been reading about this.
That area reminds me of here in Eastern Tennessee.
the dam does not appear to be in danger, thank god as it hold back 3.5 million acre feet or more... literally a cubic mile of water.
The emergency spillway is now reported to be in danger. that is may not damage the main dam, but it in itself is holding back a half million acre feet....
