State water officials said water has begun flowing over the emergency spillway at Oroville Dam. Doug Carlson, a spokesman for the state Department of Water Resources, said water started topping over the auxiliary spillway shortly before 8 a.m. at a rate of between 5,000 and 10,000 cubic feet per second.

The overhead photograph answered one question I’ve had: Will the broken spillway cause damage to houses & people? The over head photograph shows that the water is flowing down adjacent to the spillway and with only the natural gorge for the main dam to the right (viewing the photo). Any damage to houses is going to be down stream, and that is where the water is going, even if the spillway had not broken though.
That’s why they call it a spillway.

Clearly 55,000 wasn't enough going out or the level would not have rose to reach the emergency spillway. The emergency spillway cannot be regulated so the flow will now equal the inflow of 80,000 CFS, plus trees and other debris will now start jamming under bridges and the like. Be alert and careful! That's a lot of water.
I wonder if loggers will be invited to clear that wood out? It would be a shame to just waste.
This is in Tuolumne county, where I live. We have a huge die off of pine trees due to bark beetles. I’m not so sure if it is as severe north of here where Oroville watershed is. Does anybody know?
Yay! California has plenty of water! Wait. Too much water? I don’t know why, the comment about the damaging the trees made me laugh. That’s what an emergency spillway is for.
What? I thought California was in an EXTREEEEEEEME drought. Now, it has water overflowing the banks of their dams? Not possible. Somebody is lying.

Yes, Why are we not building more water storage, the flood is a current issue but we are also going to let the water go to the sea.
It is worse than that. The wacky environmentalist that control Sacramento actually want to remove dams. No chance to build any new ones.
Where does this spillway take the excess water to? Somewhere where it's not a problem, or just out into the forest or something?
