BREAKING: Lake Oroville flowing over emergency spillway for first time in dam’s history
Sacramento Bee ^ | 02-11-2017 | Dale Kasler

Posted on 02/11/2017 8:22:22 AM PST by Kevin in California

State water officials said water has begun flowing over the emergency spillway at Oroville Dam. Doug Carlson, a spokesman for the state Department of Water Resources, said water started topping over the auxiliary spillway shortly before 8 a.m. at a rate of between 5,000 and 10,000 cubic feet per second.

I'd be very worried if I lived in the town of Oroville. When the govt tells you not to worry.........WORRY.

What? Just hours or a day ago these state government officials were saying “move along, nothing to see here”......

Seems to me anyone with any forethought would have seen that record rainfalls might be the impetus of water conservation and detainment problems.

Now even with the horrendous cleanup costs and likely huge screw-ups by ‘officials’ the end stuckee will be the taxpayer. Lord help us from government.

Not just Oroville, but Marysville, Gridley, Live Oak, Yuba City and all those other towns downstream. One of which I'm in.

I think we'll be okay, though. A couple of days ago, inflow into Lake Oroville was 195,000 cubic feet per second while water was being released at 65,000 cfs.

Now, it's down to about 80,000 cfs coming in and 55,000 going out.

The rivers affected should be able to handle that even though water levels in our levees are already high.

Shouldn’t be worrying. Should be evacuating

Yes. Information has been hard to come by. I realize local governments don't want to start a panic but they could've been a LITTLE more informative.

Instead, what we've gotten is speeches about what a great job all the bureaucracies are doing.

Good thing the rain has stopped for now but there's still the melting record snowpack to deal with. Temperatures in the 40s and 50s in the areas above Oroville Dam.

I’m assuming this will be blamed on Trump.

Last they said was that the power generators (turbines) were shut down because of debris clogging them. Nowhere for that water to go.

In other news...

California increases emergency drought restrictions; record number of citations issued to homeowners for illegally using yard irrigation systems; state legislature demands conversion to 3 ounce flush commodes; umbrella tax proposed; windshield wiper rain-catch system required on all 2018 vehicles sold in California.

After safety, then they should prioritize getting the most water to the farmers in the south valley, while it flows.

We live here, actually just down the road from the Dam, but in no danger of anything. Its a blue sky day with warm temps and things couldn’t be nicer. No worries

Kudos to the workers who cleared all the trees and shrubs in the area below the spillway over the last few days.

You can see the tracks left behind by their vehicles. A few days ago, that entire area was covered with trees.

Strange nobody was worried about what animal habitats were being destroyed.

I live below a damn, but not in its path should it ever blow out. That was my intention when I bought. BTW, that damn, Lake Isabella, has been found to have problems and the Corp of Engineers has greatly restricted is water levels.

Park all those self-congratulating bureaucrats just downstream of Oroville Dam and see how long they stay put...
