Like the talk of secession in conservative southern states after Barack Obama became president, the idea of a separate California Republic builds on long-standing separatist feelings amplified by a momentous national election. Since Donald Trump became president while securing less than a third of the vote in California, the Yes California campaign a.k.a. Calexit has gotten a lot of attention and perhaps even some momentum in getting an initial measure placed on 2018 general election ballot. An estimated 7,000 volunteers have begun amassing the 585,407 signatures necessary to place a constitutional amendment on the 2018 ballot deleting the states adherence to the United States and authorizing a 2019 referendum on independence.
The arguments for Calexit are pretty simple: The state is drifting ever-further away from the rest of the country in cultural attitudes and public policies, especially with respect to immigration and the environment. Californias size and wealth (its GDP is similar to that of France) make it the one state that might make a go of it alone.
It is also a donor state when it comes to the relationship of federal taxes collected from Californians to the federal spending conducted there; one recent analysis showed California ranking 46th among the states in relative dependence on Washington.
But its clear the main reason for sudden interest in Calexit is Donald J. Trump, and the possibility a federal Republican regime under his direction would preempt California preferences on a wide range of issues. Even though Governor Jerry Brown and other statewide Democratic elected officials have kept their distance from Calexit, the saber-rattling they have conducted about the states willingness to fight Trump and the GOP in court has undoubtedly fed the Calexit sentiment. The latest Trump provocation, threatening sanctuary cities with the cancellation of all federal funds,

“We’ll just stop paying our federal taxes.”
Yeah.....there’s the answer.
See how that works for you.
Oh.....you might want to check those “unintended consequences” of that action.
That way, the bottom scum of California is happy and the Top half of California is happy...
If the referendum passes then the whole state secedes. After that if another part wants to secede from the Republic of California that is their problem not the USA’s problem.
What about SanFranSicko? Maybe split it up into thirds ;-)
Think of all the economic activity in the other 49 states when that happens? win-win!
If it does, treat them like any other country.
Never happen.
But if it did: War, Conquest, re-admission to the Union after a period of reconstruction.
All who were in rebellion not allowed to vote for 20 years.
Pull the navy marine and air bases. Shut down the defense contracts
And ask them where they’re going to get water. Hahahahaha
Yeah they have the largest economy blah blah blah. Based on what? Bongs and dildos?
Jefferson could go on it’s own tomorrow....legalize pot farms and sales, and thrive easily on income from across the whole northwest.
You could break up California into three to five states.
I must have missed that..................
I don’t like this one bit.
Behind enemy lines here in MA, and there is currently a brush fire waging thruout the state to rush to be sanctuary cities and towns. There are a handful today, but expect more as the months go by. If CA gets serious, expect states like MA to join, after they realize that without CA, they will not see another POTUS the likes of a Carter/Øbama or wannabes Canky/Kerry/Gore. If they bunch up with CA, they can have marxists run and win every election cycle.
Maybe this will show whether the USA is an actually an empire or a republic. These are not trivial times.
This issue of secession was resolved April 9, 1865.
Jefferson is mainly the northern part of California, north of San Francisco and more or less north of Sacramento.
When I lived in Santa Barbara years ago, there was a story on one of the L.A. news stations, complete with black-and-white footage from 1941, that showed an independent State of Jefferson that had been declared at that point in time.
Men were stopping cars on roads in the proposed new state, handing out flyers and phamplets to motorists declaring the establishment of the new state.
Of course, the new state had not been approved by either the federal government or the state of California.
The whole idea was abandoned after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th of that year.
Just imagine California putting a tariff on Jefferson bud.
Let them leave and while they are at it let them take Oregon and Washington State with them.
90 days is far too long.
Try 90 minutes.
Disconnect the FEDERAL electric grid.
Jam the cell phones.
Freeze investments in the New York stock exchange.
In the mid-20th century, there was a proposal to create a new state called Jefferson that would comprise parts of northern California and southern Oregon. When I visited Siskiyou, Shasta and Modoc Counties, in northern California, in 1999, I saw an occasional sign proclaiming the "State of Jefferson."
They wouldn’t survive without the rest of the U.S. They would die off due to the numbers of homosexuals, venereal diseases, illegal criminals and abortions.
