Pardon my ignorance... but where is Jefferson?

In the mid-20th century, there was a proposal to create a new state called Jefferson that would comprise parts of northern California and southern Oregon. When I visited Siskiyou, Shasta and Modoc Counties, in northern California, in 1999, I saw an occasional sign proclaiming the "State of Jefferson."

Thanks. I gather that Jefferson is the more conservative part of these two states?

The problem with this whole creation of a new state is Article 4 Section 3 of the constitution:

"New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

The rest of the state and the Congress has to go along with it. It's only happened once, West Virginia....
