President-elect Donald Trump said in a weekend interview that he is nearing completion of a plan to replace President Obamas signature health-care law with the goal of insurance for everybody, while also vowing to force drug companies to negotiate directly with the government on prices in Medicare and Medicaid.
Trump declined to reveal specifics in the telephone interview late Saturday with The Washington Post, but any proposals from the incoming president would almost certainly dominate the Republican effort to overhaul federal health policy as he prepares to work with his partys congressional majorities.
Trumps plan is likely to face questions from the right, following years of GOP opposition to further expansion of government involvement in the health-care system, and from those on the left, who see his ideas as disruptive to changes brought by the Affordable Care Act that have extended coverage to tens of millions of Americans.
In addition to his replacement plan for the ACA, also known as Obamacare, Trump said he will target pharmaceutical companies over drug prices and demand that they negotiate directly with Medicaid and Medicare.

That is what Trump promised during the campaign, so don’t be surprised and he emphasized it after the election.
“Doesnt the govt already decide how much drug companies can charge medicare/medicaid for drugs?”
no.
Currently I’m taking BF a Med thru a clinical trial. It’s FDA approved already for one condition. However, I’m taking via trial for a different condition.
The trial is paying for the Med. Otherwise it would cost my insurance $1K a month. That’s for 1 pill per day. The normal dosage is 4 pills per day, but I can’t tolerate the side effects so my dosage is lower. That’s for the generic too.
Yes, I’m aware of the investment that goes into meds and the costs involved. However, it appears the US is helping the pharmaceuticals recupe their investment. - This I have learned thru conversations online with others in various countries, comparing prices for the same (and many) meds Weve had to take over the past year for the same condition. .
Sorry for that odd auto correct. It should read that currently I’m taking a Med through a clinical trial.
The thing I don't get is why people think that “everyone” should have health insurance. It seems like a misunderstanding of what insurance is actually for. Insurance is primarily meant to protect your assets in case of some type of catastrophe.
I spent 25 years scores hauling people who had no money to hospitals. How many do you think were turned away because they didn't have coverage? None, not one in 25 years. We had one alcoholic / bum who was transported hundreds of times per year. He ran up a 2 million dollar tab. What did Obamacare do to remedy that situation. Nothing!!!
Thank you for the additional comments HollyB.
I hope this helps you.
This sounds eerily familiar.
Ok then, tell me how you’re going to cover them? And who pays for it?
Seriiously
You do realize that people with cancer would not even qualify for catastrophic?
Amen, brother.
And let's get "loser pays" while we're at it.
Did the cancer patient have insurance before? Of course the insurance will cover per its agreement
But if you’re going to give “insurance to all” how are you going to do the coverage, deductibles, co pays, and premiums . .the same, come one, come all? That flies in the face of insurance and its purpose and structure.
How about everybody shut up until his plan actually comes out?
When I hear liberals complain about "predatory lending", this jumps to my mind.
It's the biggest racket going on.
I hope whatever plan he comes up with is mandatory for all of Congress, the Senate and their staff.
I expect this. The way out of the healtcare political trap is to offer very poor and rationed medicaid care to everyone and a free market system. People with enough money (middle class and up) will buy the free market system. Poor people will get very poor treatment from the medicaid system. Costs will be kept low by the free market and by rationing medicaid care. That way people can feel happy that everyone is covered and still get really good care for themselves that’s cheap.
I’ve always (and still have as a retiree) employee health insurance so it wouldn’t change my policy.
Can’t speak for others.
“The USA picks up the tab for the lesser price of other countries. Whats new!!”
The dilemma is that if US companies don’t sell to some countries more or less at cost, they will buy the drugs illegally from a bootleg manufacturer. It becomes a choice between making a tiny profit or none at all.
Unless we’re willing to go to war for Big Pharma.
Yes, from 18 and for almost 40 years, I’ve had health insurance without lever a lapse. I’ve retired and carried the employee plan into retirement.
2 things (the only 2) things I liked about the ACA was being able to carry my kid on my plan till he’s 26. He’s healthy, in school, and it makes sense. I pay for it, but at least he had insurance. Plus, if I didn’t pay for him on the family plan, he’d probably get Medicaid since he’s not working while in college and that’s what he’d be allocated. I don’t need the fed govt paying his insurance when I can.
I also like the new pre existing condition change.
Did Nazi that response coming.
So, what happened?
I hope the heck it doesn’t mean single payer!
