NFL Blames 'Unprecedented Interest' in Election for Ratings Drop (Now Airing Free Commercials)

The NFL said “a confluence of events” is affecting ratings, including the election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton diverting viewers to cable news outlets. ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” game on Sept. 26 between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons aired at the same time as the first presidential debate, which drew a record-breaking 84 million viewers to the football game’s roughly 8 million. The next debate on Sunday night will go head to head with the game between the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers, and the league is expecting weak ratings.

I'm where you are with the boycott concept. I'm not going to give up anything really important to me if they advertise on the NFL. But if there's something that can easily be replaced, I'll do that.

I'm jealous. You get to be shareholders. It would make so much sense if all of these stadiums were financed by selling shares of stock!

Even if we are to accept the conceit that the NFL is suffering from interest in the election, not in American’s abhorrence to anti-American behavior exhibited on the gridiron, it is not so much an interest in the election as it is in the election of Trump. Nobody tunes in to see Pickles. This should be of comfort to Trump supporters, and perhaps provide a much needed shot of testosterone to those pearl clutches and bed-wetters who are only too eager to throw in the Terrible Trump Towel every time the enemedia airs free campaign ads for Pickles.

If they ever sell the Packers, I’m out, though. They are the last bastion of semi-sanity in my world. I love my guys; follow their careers, etc. Amazingly, I’ve even forgiven Brett Favre for his heart-breaking, traitorous actions upon retirement. It was a bad relationship; you learn from it and move on, LOL!

I’m one of those gals who LOVES football...and actually understands it! I’m going to be cremated in my Reggie White (92) jersey!

IOW, I’m NOT just here for the Beer & Nachos, LOL!

NFL ratings are meaningless. Why should we care? After all, the NFL is a “not for profit” entity. HAHAHAHAHAH!
The owners should toss Goodell on his butt and find a commish with the balls to set the BLM crowd adrift, regulate on field behavior and clean up their product.
Then, their precious ratings might go up.

When I learned to love football is when Belichik/Brady came to New England. The combination of brilliant strategizing and incredible athleticism made it real interesting. Now that I can follow the play, I enjoy the game.

But, alas. Now I live in Browns territory. I've learned how to watch a Browns game. When watching the Pats, even up to the last minute, one looks with the attitude that they probably have a plan to win. With the Browns, regardless what the score is, in the last few minutes, they'll find a way to lose, sometimes in near impossible ways!

“having any material impact on our ratings.”

So the 15% who are no longer watching are just not ‘material’.
Got it.

The silent threat to the NFL is the aging of the baby boom. The NFL was born and bred on the fanatical loyalty of the boomers to "NFL Today," a Sunday afternoon institution of unprecedented intensity in television. The addition of Monday Night Football with Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford and Dandy Don Meredith cemented the loyalty of a generation. Once in the seventies while traveling in the South, I stopped at a gas station, bought a pack of cigarettes, and picked up a book of matches with the cover logo "Church of Monday Night Football."

Those days have gone and will not return. Times change, and the NFL will never regain the primacy it once held. The Kaepernick stupidity is merely the latest function to fail.

I think there’s some truth in that Hinckley Buzzard.

Interests are different today. The media spent a lot of effort trying to destroy the game. They’ve pretty much succeeded.

My personal beef was the sideline bimbo that had never even been to a football game before, doing play by play or interviewing the players on the field.

That really turned me off. It was obvious they were trying to feminize a game that women would never love as much as men, with some exceptions of course.

So you had the new rulings to make it safe. You can the bimbos. It just wasn’t the same as listening to men who had spend a decade or more on the field.

Al lot of days are gone now. This new world isn’t any better for it either.

Thanks for your comments.

we are watching the Steeler/Jets game on cbs. Just before half-time there was a 2 minute news break about DT and the approval polls with an emphasis on how much the disapproval by women was.

Really - I am sure that red-blood men watching the game were interested in that. Oh well - they have an agenda to push (along with all the pink on the field).

This is almost comical at this point.

We told em. That didn’t work.

We ran polls, and that didn’t work.

Now lets try interrupting the shows they watch to send special bulletins.

Then we’ll run some more polls and hope for the best!

Why didn’t it happen in other election years?

“...they’ll find a way to lose, sometimes in near impossible ways!”

Oh, Yes. The Packers have had some ‘rebuilding years’ when NOTHING went right - like most of the 1980’s! :)

So, has the NFL had this problem in previous election years? {crickets chirping}

Yeah, I’ll be coming right back to the NFL—at half past NEVER. NFL is dead to me. Superbowl Sunday this year is Movie Sunday, then I’ll take the family out for ice cream. Put that in your pipe in smoke it, NFL.

Jeez, NFL! If you’re going to lie to me, at least respect me enough to tell me a good one, not some line of garbage that I’m going to see right through before it’s even completely out of your pie-hole. Not gonna woo back many fans that way.

Same here. I will look occasionally to see what the scores are. Not sure why, perhaps just habit.
