I did not watch the debate last night- my stomach was turning, but I followed the live thread here at FR (great job). Fact is clinton has done one-on-one debating for 15+ years never mind being a lawyer. Fact also while Trump may not have won the debate he certainly did not lose it; try as the criminal liberal media may there was no "ah-ha!!" moment Trump put out there which they will try and hang him with. He can only get stronger from here. Also- my feeling has been the VP's may turn the tide for the undecideds in this election with seemingly so much unfavorables for the top line candidates. There is no doubt in my mind Mike Pence will destroy tim co-Kaine in the VP debate.
My translation: Trump loves the American people. Hillary loves Hillary.
I had hoped that Trump would do a little better.
I had hoped that Hillary would do a little worse.
I think Trump won, but it was close enough to be a toss-up (which, I think, registers as a Trump win).
Something that I liked is that Trump clearly reached out to the Rust Belt and Michigan and Pennsylvania and Ohio. He said what he needed to say to make an impact there. Similarly, he reached out to blacks who live in crime-ridden areas. I think he comes across as sincerely trying to help. Hillary is just the same old-same old.
I think Trump made some small but important gains.
He’s the only one that drew valid blood with a few of his comments and you could see the way it slapped the grin off her face at those times.
___________
You mean when she went from looking like a demented squirrel to showing her real “...and your little dog, too.” persona.
Meanwhile, the mature alpha male let her know, non-verbally, that he was keeping his own counsel, for now, but he was keeping score, too.
The tag team approach was brutal, but Trump took his lumps and at least held his own a few times. He’ll do better next time.
She cleaned up well, but she’s really a mean girl and it showed.
While certainly the expectations that she would have some catastrophic health episode did not pan out...she lost by failing in every other way. She needed to either give people a reason to vote for her...she didn’t. Or she needed to goad Trump into confirming the narrative he was a bigoted hot head. She did the opposite, she got nasty and personal and came off as indifferent to America while just irrationally hateful of Trump. Trump came off as passionate and full of solutions for problems while successfully painting her as a mere cog in the tired old failed political system.
Agreed. He he spent serious time preparing he could have dominated. The opportunities were there and he didn't or couldn't take advantage of them. I hope he prepares more next time.
Hillary was prepared.
Trump was not.
All Trump has to do to win is not back down on immigration.
Gotcha debates mean nothing.
Those folks do not do polls.
You are absolutely correct!
Yet she lied her way through them.
Howard Dean said Trump was on Coke.
lOL.
He should refer to Holt as Candy Holt, er, I mean Lester Crawley, uh, sorry, sometimes you can't tell the difference between the partisan hacks who moderate these debates.
The Donald did not lose the debate, but he was thrown on the defensive fairly early on. Herself had a couple of enormous openings, but could not consolidate the thrust of the argument, and also did not earn all that many points.
The Donald never really got into the missing e-mails, as he was far too concentrated on deferring any demands that he release his income tax returns. He did say he would do that when Herself releases the 30,000-plus deleted emails, but he did not follow up with the very obvious breaches to cybersecurity and particularly the security of the clandestine server that Herself maintained, by individuals and very likely foreign government operatives.
Not the knock-out punch we were all looking for, but more of a preliminary bout.
If anyone can find some way to pad the polls with them, the Democrats can.
I felt like he held back a lot, too, and it was just killing him inside to do it, but he did it. At the end when he alluded to there being things he could have said, you could tell he just wanted to burst out with it all, but he’s saving it for the next debates.
He goaded her strongly in the beginning and she fired back with everything she had. He was himself and came across as speaking from the heart rather than fake and scripted. He actually cares about the US. Hillary only cares about being president.
Coming out a bit weaker is a good strategy for a three debate event. Now he has has set himself up to be the one to “gain momentum” after a “rocky” first debate.
I think the consensus among professional debate watchers is that Hillary was the more polished debater. She may have “won” the debate, but I think Trump appeared real and consistent with his heartfelt views. I personally think that Hillary’s smug demeanor will turn off independents. Trump is an insurgent candidate and will not win by being a policy wonk. He left 4 or 5 openings go unanswered, but I think he will focus on them in the next debate. This debate just convinced me more than ever that Hillary is evil beyond measure and cannot be allow3ed to become President!
winning a debate is hard to tell... you can have all the talking heads saying you won a debate because you are superior at debating but does that win hold over time. I can think someone did great in a debate but because the facts are not on there side they loos. I think it is evedent that technically Hillary did better then Trump but now after the debate everyone is asking serval things like did the debate moderator actually ask her any tough questions to answer. the other thing did the technicians screw with the sound system to make Trump look bad. over time I think this debate will prove to be a technical win for Hillary but will cause those that were on the fence to remain on the fence with both candidates retaining there supporters. the fact that Hillary only got the technical win because no tough questions of her were asked by the moderator while trump who was barraged with them will turn the technical win for Hillary into a los for her because she is the one dependent on a knock out in the debate.
You are correct. As was said in the run up to this debate all Trump needed too do was NOT blow up and make some indefensible comment of a personal nature. For Clinton her goal was to appear human, warm and likeable. Trump succeeded and Clinton did not do anything to change her “personal” image. She showed great knowledge in the area of policy but that was to be expected.
Since this is a “change” election the policy knowledge shown by Clinton is not of interest except to those who are for the status quo. Strictly on points and looking at the debate from the position of a professional “judge” of debate tactics one could say Clinton won on points but then only narrowly and with the obvious help of the moderator.
Bottom line is this debate changed no minds so looking at it that way Trump was the winner.
Debating is just a liberal parlor game. Presidential debates in particular are just political bloodsport put on to entertain the peasants, and worse, to empower the media.
Anyone whose mind was changed on who to vote for last night should not be allowed anywhere near a polling place.
