Sowell: Our Political Predicament
Creators Syndicates ^ | September 20, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/19/2016 11:58:48 AM PDT by jazusamo

There is no point denying or sugar-coating the plain fact that the voters this election year face a choice between two of the worst candidates in living memory. A professor at Morgan State University summarized the situation by saying that the upcoming debates may enable voters to decide which is the "less insufferable" candidate to be President of the United States.

My own take on this election is that the voter is in a situation much like that of an American fighter pilot in World War II, whose plane has been hit by enemy fire out over the Pacific Ocean and is beginning to burst into flames.

If he bails out, there is no guarantee that his parachute will open. But even if he lands safely in the ocean, he may be eaten by sharks. If he comes down on land, he may be captured by the Japanese and tortured and/or killed.

In other words, there are huge and potentially fatal risks. But, if he remains in the plane, he is doomed for certain. To me, Donald Trump represents multiple and potentially fatal risks. But Hillary Clinton is a certainty of disaster. Her vaunted "experience" is an experience of having repeatedly made decisions that turned out to be not merely wrong but catastrophic.

The most obvious example has been her role as Secretary of State during the Obama administration's decision to undermine and help destroy the governments of two nations — Egypt and Libya — that were no threat whatever to Americans or to America's interests.

I don’t know if Sowell is the best but he most definitely is high up the list of great conservative thinkers.

Most people know that Trump is not a total conservative, especially in the culture wars. He is in fact a populist who wants to save the country from many years of insane liberalism.

I suspect Sowell fears that Trump will take the USA towards economic and military isolation. A lot of Trumps decisions will be based on his advisers in his cabinet. From the rumors that have been whispered, I think the cabinet will be filled with solid, trust worthy conservatives.

Sowell is lost within a cocoon of high minded snobbery. He is so shielded from reality he cannot distinguish literal evil from his perception of evil. I do not think Hillary is the only one suffering from a mind debilitating disease. The whole lot of so called, conservative mouthpieces and wordsmiths were caught sleeping. None of them can lay claim to Trump's call to make America great again. They all have prospered under obamination, and some of them are more open borders and globalist rule than even the laziest liberal.

Used to love you, Dr. Sowell. You have accomplished great things. Now, having correctly determined that Hillary is beneath consideration, you need to wait and see about Trump, and SDSU in the meantime. There is nothing to be gained, but votes to be lost by continuing to beat the drum against Trump.

Is this one of his moronic "random thoughts".

He has to say what he says because he's a token black allowed to rub elbows with rich white people in Palo Alto when he knows he really belongs in East Palo Alto.

Sowell has been the best of the best for most of my adult life. He still is. I support Trump because Clinton allows no choice. I believe Sowell just said that.

You think Hillary is a less dangerous choice for POTUS?

Of course not, but neither do I think we have 2 of the worse possible candidates for President either, and that is where I disagree with him. I think Trump is the best possible candidate for President that we had out of the 20 or so choices that ran from both parties. He is the only one that talked about returning this country to a country of laws and maintaining its sovereignty.

People seem to forget that it was really Cruz that started the whole trashing of opponents. Starting off with his remark about New York values. Stating that the violence exhibited at Trump rallies were because of Trump. Then culminating with the ad attack on Melania.

The choice is clear. Survival as a free nation with a fighting chance with Trump, or to a godless socialist cesspit for generations with Hillary.

Sowell doesn't understand that there's only ONE man who can destroy the Media Machine in this country.

I've been saying this since last year. The destruction of the Media is ALL I want out of Trump.

He showed us what he's got last Friday. :)

It seems as though just about every media person is unwilling to give Trump any credit for tapping into the pent up anger of years of GOP disappointment. They just seem to give him any compliment.

Just as well. Trump doesn't seem to be the least concerned about a legacy or his reputation in the professional class. It even makes him more likable to the average person. It means he may even turn out to be on each of the great leaders of our time.

I suspect Sowell fears that Trump will take the USA towards economic and military isolation.

Considering how far we have gone in the other direction I actually hope he does.

I am tired of our being the world's personal rescue squad politically, militarily and economically.

Why are we giving money to Mexico so they can build a wall on their southern border?

Why are we pushing our own citizens out of college slots and giving them to foreign students?

Why are we not only allowing but encouraging businesses to invest their money over seas by telling them that we will tax the devil out of them if they bring their profits back to the states?

You are correct. Sowell’s mind has decayed.

Back in a day, Sowell and his mentor Milton Friedman had some interesting things to say.

But I think both of those men could have gone farther to truly educate the American people about economics. As it was, they remained mostly in the intellectual realm. But I suppose they can be forgiven because economics is such a difficult subject.

What we most need is for an economic genius to come along and explain to us the mechanisms of job creation and wealth creation. Show us your animated model of how the market works behind the scenes.

Free Republic and the web put Sowell and George Will out of a job and they could never deal with that fact. So they need to be sent out to pasture or stay inside and watch several hours of Oprah and soapbox operas each day. Their minds are no longer quick enough for the world of social media and Free Republic conversation.

Truth be told, their wisdom was greatly exaggerated anyway.
