On Friday, Brian Doherty of the Libertarian flagship publication Reason scolded me, and by extension anyone else who has been turned off by some of the Johnson-Weld tickets public statements, that we were placing more importance on the attitude stuff related to culture war issues about discrimination and guns than on the really crucial issues of spending or budgets or the growth of government.
Then on Monday, Gary Johnson came out in favor ofdrumroll, pleasea carbon tax to fight global warming.

Or how the asphalt used to pave our roads is produced.
Exactly. If he bleeds more voters from H than Trump all is good.
Tear up the asphalt and go back to dirt roads!
Gary Johnson never puts down the bong long enough to discover where he really is politically. I’d simply describe him as a stoner.
They are going left to get the Bernie voters. I think this election Johnson hurts Hillary more.
>>The only reason they are running is to help Clinton win the election.<<
I don’t think so. The carbon tax comment is a clear play for Hillary’s votes, and turns off conservative voters at the same time. He probably senses that Hillary is the most vulnerable right now due to her Foundation problems and is trying to give Hillary’s voters a place to go when they finally throw in the towel on her over ethical issues.
Granted, most of her voters wouldn’t desert her if she shot someone in cold blood on 5th Avenue, but some will.
The manipulation of Words is what politicians have done for centuries and millennia. In the book Our Oriental Heritage, the author Will Durant discusses Confucius (page 658) on his lessons of government and the Higher Man. Here's the excerpt:
Obscurity of thought and insincere inaccuracy of speech seemed to him national calamities. Hence when Tsze-loo told Confucius, The Prince of Wei has been waiting for you to administer the government: what will you consider the first thing to be done? Confucius answered to the astonishment of prince and pupil, What is necessary is to rectify names. |
Geeze quoting hillary clinton here?
“embrace of the disturbing alt-right political philosophy.
Shucks!!
VOTE TRUMP!
; )
You could’ve asked ME that, a while back, and save yourself the headache!!!
Why do you think i did the DandS ditchnswitch???
This is Johnson’s third time around. He has always had that ‘it’s mine, darn it’, like ol’ granny hillary.
If hillary was a soviet chairman, I believe she would be worse than Stalin. I am serious, her character screams absolute evil.
I used to say, at the end of the (Bill) Clinton presidency, that she was worse than Bill because Bill just wanted to get laid and get along. It’w why he did so much of what the republican congress wanted. Hillary was the one with an agenda and the truly scary one.
I feel stronger than ever.
I remember when I got within about 40 feet of her at Westlake park in downtown Seattle in the early 90’s when she was pushing her health care idea. There were a lot of people protesting and I was one of the few that got in the section right in front of her. Patty Murray was on stage too.
Patty was in tears. Hillary was a rock.
I have three famity members who Re big Gary Johnson fans. Posting all over their Facebook pages.
All three voted for Obama in 2012.
I hate typing on my phone!
This guy has never appeared on radar here; therefore, this must make him unimportant. After reading a bit more about him, he is akin to Jon Huntsman, without the Manchurian.
Bye bye. Have a pleasant day. Mr. Johnson. Watch the talcum powder.
A CARBON TAX? I can hardly think of something less libertarian, besides gun control.
I didn’t surmise that Johnson was taking more from Hillary but that the total third party vote was (factoring in Stein). But maybe he will, what a lark! His main appeal (besides to potheads) seems to be to RINOs who’d vote Hillary over Trump. Here in IL in 2010 we had some no-name win the rat nomintion for LT Governor and get forced off the ticket cause he hit his wife or something, he then ran for Governor as an Independent and we celebrated cause we thought he’d take votes from the rat, but what votes did he probably get? Those from democrats who wouldn’t support the incumbent rat Governor and may have voted Republican if they didn’t have the other option.
I expect the Libertarian party may split apart into fake libertarian liberal and strident anarco-capitalist fantasy factions. Nothing is holding the factions together other than a shared support for weed.
The idea of a "pollution tax" was a libertarian alternative to environmental protection regulation back in the 1970s.
Of course, it goes against what we now think of as libertarianism, but at the time, people like Milton Friedman and Murray Rothbard -- maybe Hayek and Mises, too -- liked the idea.
So if Johnson is indeed trying to poach republicans on the fence about Trump, then it’s well worth letting people know about this.
